Aug 2010 ordered and fitted new alternator to my 95 300tdi, today it started making some horrible noise and getting very hot :( although no light came on and the rev works ok so I assume a bearing
I had bought the alternator from Alternator mart £97 today same thing £138
anybody got any ideas of better prices

Sounds about right for your average motor factors. I just paid £150 from a local LR specialist near me in Hants. The first one I bought, I got for trade price through a mate, which was £70 cost price......but this was a cheaper exchange unit, and turned out to be faulty, even though it was 'new'.......I have seen ones for around £90-£100 on ebay.........Just depends on how long you can wait. An overhaul on your existing unit is an option, especially if its just bearings.

Ok I'm trade but even so. Cheap and nasty Chinese was £45, Lucas £42 exchange. Apparently Chinese units are expensive to import now and the uk manufacturers are improving their competitiveness.

Result :)

The cheapy Chinese is what I had first off, which turned out to have a faulty voltage regulator, even though it was spanking new.....My mate couldn't get another one from the supplier in time, so thats why I ended up paying full price elsewhere.

Our local Lucas Service place wrapped up a few years back, which is a real shame.

Yeah I got a brand new Chinese, didnt work, swapped it and it lasted about a year maybe a touch more (pretty good considering it's 95% off road) so will be interesting to see how long this lasts.

Certainly better construction, and a slightly different layout round the back too.

Cheers.

Just thought I would add a note, in the end purchased a new alternator from Craddocks, brilliant service £107 next day delivery
