My 1997 300Tdi Disco has a two-button alarm/imobiliser/central locking fob.

It does not work from any distance away from the vehicle and must be held up close to the vehicle for it to work. Even then it occasionally needs 3 or 4 presses for it to do anything.

With the driver's door open, for example, or with me sitting in the drivers seat it works perfectly *almost* every time.

I have replaced the battery already and this made no difference.

Random people have suggested the fob needs replacing.

Someone else said it's my tinted windows blocking the radio signal(!).

The local indy Land Rover garage suggested it's the receiver inside the dashboard that's on it's way out.

So... what do you guys reckon??

I can live with it as it is, but if it does stop working one day I will be completely stranded. Any ideas?

Mines done that for years on my 1998 model. I have to touch the bodywork with the fob before it unlocks, even then, it only works when you touch a certain part of the body. Both fobs do it even with new batteries. It would be interesting to find out if someone has the answer to this. I just put up with it as that's the cheapest option :)

Hi all
Ive done a forum search of my problem and this has come up

So my problem is on my disco II key fob works but you have to hold it up to the back passenger window to unlock it.

So as discool has mentioned a company and ive searched their website but do i have to buy a programmer with a key or...... can i use the programmer on my working key to improve it
cheers:tea:

The antenna runs up the n/s screen pillar. However the lucas system is prone to problems. The remote being the most common. There is a company that can supply replacements, but you need to send the alarm box off as well.

did you get the correct battery ????

my fob was the same......was getting closer and closer to the window to work. then packed in.

put a new battery in. cr2025 ......... still didn't work.

found spare fob......everything working ok.

took battery from my Renault fob cr2025 to knackerd fob ....... still didn't work.

took battery from spare fob to knackered fob ....... everything working ok.

battery in fobs are cr2032, bought new one and now ok.

cr2032 are slightly thicker.

The correct battery is a CR2032 your owners handbook confirms that.
Why we call them a battery I don't know as it's a cell, two cells make a battery.:)

With you D2 the security system is different from the D1 and has a receiver that's remote from the ecu, the receiver is know to have it's problems.

yes, it does say so in the handbook,( I know, RTFM !!) but as my Renault uses the cr2025, I naturally assumed ALL fob batteries were the same !!

Just a quick related question - if you lock the vehicle (disco 1 in my case) with the key rather than the remote does it still arm the immobiliser or just lock the car? Would that be a temporary work around to avoid being stranded if fob battery suddenly looks like dying?

Just clean and remove any corrosion from the existing earth point where ever that is, but then u may also have moisture inside the unit.

Depends on what model of D1, 200 series Yes to both, it has active immobilising. :)
1996MY onwards 300 series No, it has passive immobilising so no fob no remobilising of the engine, u then just use the emergency access code :(.

uhoh, mines 98, so emergency access code then...

hmm, need to search for that one but sounds complicated!

EDIT - oh bugger, how does one find out what that code might be? - I didnt get much paperwork with my Disco :(

Take VIN and proof of ownership to a main LR dealer they should be able to supply u with the 4 digit number.

How u enter the code is detailed in the owners handbook, forums and on the www.
