im thinking of upgrading my freelander 1 to a disco, but not shure which one to get. it has to be a diesel, manual or auto. should i go for the 300tdi or disco 2 td5. are there anything to look out for and if anything does go wrong, which will cost more to fix.

any advice welcome.

thanks.

Both of these engines are very good. The main problems to look out for on the discovery 1 are rusty inner and outer sills, rusty boot floor, rust inner wings and leaky sunroofs. The Discovery 2's most common problems relate to the air suspension. Both of them should be relatively cheap to maintain and repair should anything go wrong.

td5 will be lovely until the point when it goes wrong. then it will rape ur wallet and not use any protection. your wallet will contract an std and you will lose it and ur td5 and you will wish you had bought a bicycle.

at the minute i have a freelander 1 with the td4 engine. the last few month, the engine has had a lot of problems, mostly sensors which has put me off the td5 a little. is the td5 a better engine than the td4 in reliability

I would go the TDI route - a am sensorphobic - my 200tdi has had a new boot floor and is about to get work on the sills and inner wings. The sunroof leaked but I found that cleaning the moss and crap of the seal helped stop that problem. Its done 211000 and still goes really well. I have threatened every year since having it that if it failed its MOT it would have to go, but here I am fixing the sills for another year of fun. Carrying me and the moaner, two kids, a border collie/fish (wet dog), camping kit the canoe and all the gear in comfort is hard to achieve in anything else and it still allows you to pop in to tesco for supplies and park in a standard bay whilst loaded up- my 110 could carry this and more but the disco has the edge on comfort. oh yes and they are cheap as chips used to be. I am getting another 110 or 90 though because they turn me on!!

A common fault of the TD5 is cracks on the head around the injectors, if you catch it early, it'll cost around £2300 to fix, if not, the diesel will give the turbo a life of its own, and that will be a little more expensive. If you do have to replace the head, speak to Turners, as Land Rover only seem to have refurbed ones on stock.

So check for diesel in the oil before you you purchase (look for rising oil level on dipstick, very clean oil, or get it tested for around £37).

All the other bits and pieces are relatively cheap to sort (Maf, oil in loom, etc).

I've had to sort all of the above, and (strangely) still absolutely love the engine.

I'd go the 300tdi mate...they're near axe-proof (which is why I bought one). If you shop carefully for a car, you'll find good examples out there, so don't pounce on the first one which seems a good deal. ;)

Any problems can be fixed, but experience tells me that engine ones rape the wallet hardest. I'd rather go for a perfect engine and everything else good, than average engine and body. I'd also suggest looking stock-standard models, as ones with offroading accessories will generally have had a bit of a hard time/mud not cleaned out properly from underneath (causing rust), etc. ;)
