Ive been offered a Disco Td5 GS manual, 1999 V plate,90k without MOT for 2.5k is this a good price?

I'm really after some advice of what to look out for i know about a few problem these have i.e head gasket failures, and air suspensions problems,i know these have been rectified on this vehicle, oh and has a leaky sunroof aswell any other faults anyone knows about would be really helpful.
I am a diesel fitter by trade so not bothered about any work needed i just don't know alot about the disco really so any help would by much appriciated.

Thanks in advance

Dave.

I would say no. At least get it MoT'd and find out why it hasn't got one. The reason could be something like 3 amigos which could be tricky to repair. To anyone else, I'd point out that repairs can be expensive on this vehicle, but as you say you could do most things yourself and make it cheaper. I can't see why anyone would sell a car with no MoT unless there's a serious fault. To compare prices have a look on e-bay. Also check all the paperwork very carefully in case it's stolen or cloned.

for 2.5k you have got £750-£1000 to put things right and it sounds like you can do most of the work your self abs(or 3 amigos) can be a problem when it goes wrong but very rare it cost loads of money wheel bearings can be expensive (£180-£200 each) and a cause of abs problems and parts for the ace system (if fitted) can be very expensive

Right here goes...

Had a look today and a drive (of on a private runway) and this what i found...

1. Leaky sunroof
2. Cltch pedal rubber
3. N/S wing mirror glass cracked
4. Slight dent in drivers door (easily repairable)
5. Rear brake pads (as one has lost it's pad)
6. Rear door won't open (from inside or outside)
7. Seems that the EGR valve may have been diconnected as the metal flexi pipe underneath has been cut through, and the exhaust manifold has a metal flexi pipe has been crimped over,is this maybe where the Egr cooler was originally

Apart from those faults it's drives lovely can't fault it,also has a nice gear change,no clutch slip and no unwanted lights on the dash.

Really tempted to go for this, and a straight swap with are other car, as the disco is the mrs best mate's car, so cash wise we would be the better off.

Thanks

Dave.

no unwanted lights on the dash.

.
So long as the lights DO come on when you first switch it on, that sounds OK. Shouldn't there be lights on to tell you about the brake problem? If that's the only reason it won't MoT, I'm surprised the seller hasn't had it done.

Yes all the lights come on then go out as they should, there are no braking issues either.

The only reason she didn't mot it was due her using her boyfriends newer disco, he has now got a works van and she just left it parked up on the drive and hadn't got round to selling it cause she is lazy and lost intrest after shelling out for the head to be done ,just thought it would be a steal at that price the mrs could use it to tow our horsebox and caravan as we didn't have a suitable car for this had to borrow a mates frontera when we wanted to tow the horsebox.

sunroof fixes can be a pain what you realy need to do is strip the headlining and remove the sunroof and start again using some good quality silicone repair the drain pipes with plenty of glue and silicone if needed new set if seals cheap of ebay and i use a little silicone to stick them in it does help seal them

Any ideas on the rear door not opening when unlocked easy fix or not?

rear door as in boot door if so remove the land rover badge and spreay loads of wd40 in there then just keep working the handle inside and out
Yes sorry, the boot door the outside handle seems stiff probally from being stood for a few months also wont open from the inside either.

I regularly have to lube my tailgate handle as it sticks up, so it cant be opened from the out side.

I certainly wouldnt let that put you off.

Sounds like you might just be in the right place at the right time !

All the things youve listed are fixable, and with relation to the TD5 disco,s other " common " faults, you,ll be the same as all the rest of us !.

Theres not one thing that I havnt been able to fix on my 2002 model with the spanners in my garage and the Landyzone in my " Favorites " bar !.
