Wondering if someone can clear this up, looking at some axle housing swapping. In a later Disco 1 with 24 spline axles, I have been told that the top swivel bearings on an ABS equipped Disco front axle are needle bearings and are weaker under heavy off road use and the non ABS are taper roller bearings same as the lower bearings and thereby stronger.
Also that in the Rangie classics with 10 spline axles the set up is different again, adjustable top bushes or something same as some of the Defenders.

can't imagine there's much difference, but would be interesting to know... Geuss it'll be minimal - I'm sure someone like JM will be along shortly to clear up any confusion :)

Yes, thanks for the inputs, I have done a refurbish of the swivels on our non-ABS '97 Disco and could not see why the ABS ones would need to be all that different, other than a hole for the ABS sensor that registers off the CV joint circumference. But looking at the two parts lists posted by discool, you can see a fair difference up top. A mate is changing from an ABS axle to Non on his '98 because he thinks the ABS axle is not as "durable" off road, but then he also thinks that the older 10 spline axles are stronger than the later 24 splines for some reason.
I just don't know and have not been able to venture an opinion either way, I have had no problems with standard set ups on either of our later non ABS Disco 1's.
Just thought someone on here may know what and why, that's all.

I have a 96 abs disco 1 and have replaced the swivels and can definitely say the top swivel is a plain bearing not a roller taper bearing, the reason is that the abs sensor would not fit inside a taper bearing. The bottom has a taper.
