ABS, ETC, HDC warnig lights all on!!

I have a really interesting problem on my new vehicle.

It is a TD5 ES Auto yr 2000.

Driving along and on came the afore mentioned lights......oh **** I thought. Pulled over, turned it all off, re-started and all gone again!!

Carried on driving and they all came back on together!!!

The lights are now all permanently on and really giving me grave concerns.

Have taken the disco to a Landy dealer in Bournemouth, and they are telling me that there is a shuttle valve coming up and they repeated the diagnostics twice as they were surprised by this. Apparantly the next stage is that I need a 2 hour loom pin check and then if the loom prooves to be fine, then I need a £1100 + vat ABS Modulator unit to resolve the problem.

They have also stated that I have no longer the benefits of ABS, traction control, or hill descent control either.

It is going in for the loom pin check on Wednesday to another Landy dealer in Salisbury, as there labour rate is £25 per hour less!!!! (Crooks!!!!)

The techhy that is doing this explained all of the process to me and seems really switched on, lets hope it is a loom problem or it is going to be open wallet surgery!!!!

The techhy did suggest to me that this is a known and that there is a technical bullet in about it going around land rover..........

Further developements in the saga...

The disco has now been for its second interrogation with the dealers, and it has now been transpired that it is definitely the ABS modulator unit that is in their words open circuit.

The loom check that they did was to search and ensure that the resistances were correct in line with the specs. but when it came to checking the unit, it had no path to earth, hence, open circuit and and seriously faulty unit.

The cost of the unit is £1105.10, + £6.35 Brake fluid + £153.60 Labour (3 hours) all + VAT...... £1486.66 OUCH!!!!!

Well, it is a safety critical part................... but sheeesh that is going to hurt with all of the preceeding diagnostic work.........

Food for thought if not.........worst case scenario if you see those three lights appear upon your dash board.......

update to follow on repair!!!!!

The final stretch in the saga...........

The garage took the car to an ABS specialist, they interogated the computer for the umpteenth time... and again the fault recorded was the shuttle valve failure. They removed the ABS unit stripped it down, and replaced he shuttle valves, put it back together, cleared the computer fault codes, and hey presto no lights on the dash board, ABS ETC HDC all working ...... coola shaker!!!!

I am so pleased that the lights are gone now kind of puts your mind at rest..... cost well, £350 job done beats £1200 for a new modulator unit!!!

I wonder what lights are going to be on next??

Good to hear fault found
Mines had the errors cleared and they await the onset on another to pinpoint excatly waht device is causing. Between Pressure control valve and directional control valve. things is, it is so intermittent and I have tried vary hard to go round corners fast

Same prob as Daviop above, lights on but only intermittently, electrical pin checks all done, dealer says that its the modulator.

Had a similar problem with the abs/hdc/tc thing a couple of months ago,turned out to be poor earthing of the modulator unit.A 1/4 turn with a 10mm spanner sorted it.With your ACE faults,it may be worth recalibrating the "lateral accelerometers" this is the usual suspect,it does not log its own fault code as the ecu wipes it each time you key off.Other faults will stay in the ecu though,quite often they are just glitches and are very misleading.
Going back to the Abs situation,modulator units - indeed all brake components tend to be very well made,as an independant I will go a long way to prove 100% what the cause is,rather than going to what we call "throw bits at it stage"Techs in a dealership dont have to deal direct with the poor customer - I do ! If it has to be then there is no way around it I need to be sure when facing the customer !!

jayessdeecee - I can recommend a very good independent specialist in Bristol if that is not too far. Used to be a main dealer LR mechanic. Was superb when I had problems with my EAS, and a hell of a lot cheaper than going to a main dealer!

The company that stripped and fixed the shuttle valves on my unit were called Autotek, in Parkstone, Poole Dorset. 01202 740025 guys name is John.
They are actually vehicle electronic experts.

From my understanding this is a common fault on the freelander as well as the discovery. What they were suggesting is that if the ABS and the Traction control does not get used, (ie not to actuate the shuttle valves) they then to seize and hence why all of the faults start to occur.

If that is the case does this mean that once a week you need to deliberately activate your ABS or get on some wet grass and wheel spin?????? How strange??

So far so good with our repair, we have had instances of the lights coming on, but took it back, and full diagnostic check again suggested that there was a wheel sensor that was sending back a spurious signal, not sure which one though?! Since then no further problems, been as good a gold!! From what he indicates to me is that there is a very fine resistance balance in the system, and the slightest thing can upset this and hence the dsh glows like a christmas tree!!

I suppose this is trying to develope the understanding and ability for early warning of premature component failure, but is not quite there yet?!!
