Found a bit of a problem when trying to connect my Coachman caravan up to our Freelander 1.

The friction lever on the caravan which has to be upright when hitching up fouls on the spare wheel.

Appreciate any ideas on how to get around this ?

If you hitch is alko i have seem somewhere they do a handle especially for 4x4 s that have a lack of space due to the wheel on the rear door and in fact if you look in towsure catalogue item number aks50 it is an adaptor handle for rear door with spare wheel ....i still use the old and trusted lever stabiliser so im ok .
hope this helps price £49.95 so not cheap

it is possible to hitch up if you are dead straght on to caravan. you can buy the short adaptor i got one cheap at a caravan market, but just taking the long arm off and pushing down on the two exposed arms works just as well.

I've got the alko hitch, normally, i rotate the coupling head so the handle clears the spare wheel, then as I lower the hitch with the jockey wheel, push the handle over and down, just clicks in.

not as easy as a straight on and off, but always works okay.

Hi, I have a coachman with the same problem, could have bought the 4x4 conversion handle, but being a tight fisted Yorkshireman I just take the screw out of the handle remove the handle then connect up and the replace it to lock it down.

How far off the upright is it? Not had to hitch up to our 'van yet...

If it's just a couple of inches in it then get one of the spacers, that go between the two ball and the bracket on the car, I use one on the R75 so the friction head clears the metal plate that protects the bumper.

Edit: this is the item number for a 2" one on eBay 170776485450
