On my landrover 90 the wiring behind the dashboard is a birds nest, im struggling to find the wires that go to the fuel and temp gauges.
I have been told that both gauges should have a positive feed from a green wire then earth out through the sensor wire

Can anybody identify the wires below:

Theres this bundle of wires that come out the centre of the dash

Behind the dash i can see a red and white wire which i beleive to be the power for the dash light bulbs, a black wire and a brown wire which come from a relay in the top right hand corner of the dash (unfortunately the picture is dark and you cant see the relay)
There are also white and black wires coming from the relay which appear to go to an unidentified switch next to the hazard and interior light switch.

If anybody can help it would be much appreciated, i think the wiring has perhaps been chopped about at some point.

Your way off, ''ive been told'' isn't really what you need to be going by.
First off, you need a multimeter, if a wire isn't working you will never know.
Second you need this. http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/Lucaswirecode.htm.
And lastly you really could be using the wiring diagram for your vehicle, google it.

And as James pointed out, you need to be behind the instrument cluster.
Looking at the fuse box you have an early vehicle.
Fuel gauge is a harness that connects to the main (dashboard) harness in the engine bay then goes down under the drivers seat and across to the top of the tank (on a 90) , this is why you need a multimeter to check for continuity.

That relay is odd, does it get power? Follow the wires and see what the relay powers, it could be for aux lamps, glow plugs if its a petrol/diesel conversion, anything really.

Thanks for the replies so far, its a 1985 landrover 90 and i'm in march cambridgeshire.

Behind the instrument panel i cant seem to see any green wires at all to feed the fuel and temp gauges, will have to have another look.

  • both fuel and temp gauges don't work
the glass fuse holders are complete ****s.. i'd brass brush them clean, and they'd still flicker on and off when i hit a bump. i got sick and switched em for blades on my 86.

you really could do with a cheap multimeter, but i'd deffo start with the fuses. check power is going through them

Can you get it down to me? I live just outside Bury St Edmunds, I'd be happy to take a look. I have an 85 90 and have done all the wiring on it during a rebuild so we have something here to compare to.

What else runs through the fuel and temp gauges? Check the fuse diagram on the back of the fuse box, this sounds like a bad earth to me.

That's very kind mate, i may take you up on that offer, however, the truck wont be taxed for another 2 weeks
(a long story involving DVLA following an engine transplant)

Sorry, i didnt make it very clear.
The gauges are not working because the wires are not plugged in, i cant seem to find them behind the instrument panel ;)

That's fine fella, if you don't get it sorted meanwhile your more than welcome to pop down.

You may as well start from the start, pull the drivers seat out, take to cover plate out and you will see the tank, 3 wires will be going to the tank (or is it two? I'll take a look at mine) Find out what colour they are, from memory should be a white wire and green with a black trace.

Just checked, off the top of the tank you have green/black trace , white/brown trace and a black.

This should run to a wiring block in the engine bay right up by the fuel filter somewhere.

Thanks very much, your help is appreciated.

i did have another question which kind of follows the dash theme, behind my instrument panel i have no light bulbs / holders, they seem to be missing from the loom, i do have a red/white wire which i believe feeds the bulbs, i just need the bulb holders that push on to the tubes (if that makes sense)
Does anybody have a part number? i found these on ebay but i'm not quite sure if they are what i need

They wont work, look for smiths gauge bulb holders. It sounds to me that you have some wiring missing, that's not going to be an easy thing to help you with without seeing the vehicle.
The temp and fuel gauges should have a common earth by way of a fly lead connected across the two mounting nuts behind the gauges.
