A Good Jack

It really depends so much on what you intend to do with it.

For off roading most will suggest a hi-lift jack as they can be used as an emergeny winch and can get you out of trouble.

For general repair work I'd suggest a 2-ton trolley jack and axle stands.

For just normal use then just about anything will do.

For good audio, gold plated 3.5mm Stereo jacks are handy.

If you don't do any mechanical repairs yourself, try and find a Jack of all trades.

If you want to keep the interior all clean and tidy, try a jack in a box.

If you have young children, try Jackanory.

If you like to read, try Jack and the Beanstalk.

If you are perv (and I'm not suggesting you are,) go to your local high school and have a jack off.

If you like hot food, try JACKet potatoes ... I'm getting saaaad now :)

Halfords Hi Lift jack is good for the workshop - but wait for them to have on special offer, and you'll need axle stands as well

For out and about either a bottle jack (one off a disco as normal ones aren't high enough) or a hi-lift (also known as Farmers) jack

I use a Blue-Point aluminium race jack. It's fantastic, rapid lift till it takes the weight, more than enough lift height fo a 110 yet low enough to get under (ab)normal cars. Plus the fact it's ally, you can easily lift it up an pop it in the back of the landy. My next door neighbour has got a Costco jobbie, it's good and strong but you can't lift the barsteward. I know the ally one is dear, but put yer back out or give yourself a hernia will cost more in time off sick.
That's what I told the finance department(wife) any way!
 
I've had a task master 2 tonne one for 15 years! Did every thing I wanted of it until a disco killed it recently! So I'm on the look out too
 
High lift jacks really aren't safe for working on cars, they're built for a purpose which isn't that. I don't even like putting axle stands under when using one. Never ever get under a car supported by one. They aren't safe for that purpose. They are brilliant for what they're meant for tho! If doing regular work on any car you need a decent trolley jack and axle stands not a high lift jack. If you go off road a lot you need a high lift jack. If you do both get both! A land rover dropping on you will kill you!
 
I have a selection hanging around, a big and very heavy 3ton sealey trolley jack for in the garage, a small bottle jack that lives in the 90 for changing tyres and the a hi-lift. Of all of them the hi-lift gets very little use, but for the times you need it's fantastic.

Apologies if i'm teaching you to suck eggs but make sure you read about how to use a hi-lift properly before using it in anger, they can be very dangerous.

If you dont have a jack or axle stands then something like this should be about right.

you cant beat a proper jack! Im thinking of getting a Hi-Lift for the landy itself to sit in the back but other then that i wouldnt trust anything but a proper trolley jack - got to look on how much you trust stuff and what your worth! for extra 50quid or so you can get something you KNOW you wont get crushed with!
