errr done a very brief search but see anything relevant

bought a set of axles with A frame attached for my 90 brakes drums circa 1985/6 with the idea of restoring off the vehicle and a nice easy swap to keep it on the road

So rebushed and swiveled the aframe painted etc assembled and offered up in one piece and at the chassis end it's widely too wide.....wtf? Does the a frame widen in the development of the defender as it gets Tdi'd?

Everything else looks normal.......getting tape measure out

B ugg er it looks so nice painted up

Dunno .. but I just put a '97 300Tdi Disco A-Frame onto my 1989 90 (originally drum rear brakes) and it all fitted .. though it does have the Disco axles fitted too .. but the original A-Frame on the 90 is identical to the one on the Disco, indeed it's been passed on to a mate for his 300Tdi Defender 90.

What axles did you buy? I think Disco 2 will be quite different, for instance.

Be a bit more explicit in what you're putting where .. ;)

Thanks for coming back so quickly...and excuse the poor spelling of my question.....I was thoroughly pee'd off

I didn't think there was a difference either.....since I threw my toys out of the pram I've had another attempt...this time dismantling the a frame and putting it in an arm at a time and then the swivel arrangement....it all fits but the positioning of the arms at the chassis end is quite asymmetric.....? There doesn't,seem to be any wedging at the swivel end although I've spread so much ffing grease around now its hard to tell

Perhaps there is some adjust ment at the chassis end with those brackets that fit to the chassis and from which the arms hang? Quite keen to find out first before I undo the nuts and break the paint on them......sorry starting to get into the painting side of it now, you know 'bull**** baffles brains'

err sorry it's an AA prefix chassis circa 1985/6 but I think it didn't get registered for a bit

Hi Paul, look like standard early 90 axles with disc drum set up front back. Seemed to be identical to whats on there now. plan to do each component up off the vehicles and replace when ready piecemeal to keep it rolling

When I went to swap the A frame and swivel over I put it all together and lightly tightened at the swivel end and the result was the chassis end seemed 15 to 20 mm too wide. Swivel housing is the standard 63mm wide.....

So now having taken the a frame apart it fits but is obviously putting a bit of pressure on at the chassis end.....is there any adjustment anywhere else.

Well your replies have reassured me that I don't have the wrong parts so I've put it all together and settled it all down torqued it all up (on it's wheels on flat ground) and it doesn't look wrong, the only thing is the bushes (genuine polybush in this case) are slightly pushed to the outside of the joint leaving the inside of it being able to be slightly looser....so I should imagine there is a 5 mm gap, inside, between the two bush halves. The metal insert fits perfectly though

I'll try and post a photo but I'm tempted to run it like this and see what happens.....all seems VERY firm

Calmed down a bit now

I think the A-frame to chassis plates might have some leeway, but I didn't have to undo mine, indeed they were crusted up so I never even tried. As yours, mine were extremely tight, but as you say, the metal centre sat perfectly, just the bush part was a little squashed, but I also used oem, not polybushes. I figured they old ones lasted years, polybushes wouldn't .. ;)

If it were mine and as it's now fitted, I'd run it a while but keep an eye on it for further twisting or causing premature wear etc. Then would be the time to perhaps break the bolts on the chassis brackets and see how much leeway they have .. but I'd buy replacement nuts and bolts, if not the brackets themselves, before trying to undo them, I fear they _will_ break no matter how careful you are unless they've been extremely well covered and cared for.

Thanks for your thoughts Paul, I think that's sound advice. Will add it to the next order to have them to hand when the moment comes

I know what you mean about metalastic oem I just loved the idea of being able to make an easy bush swap if needed. I've now polybushed everything that needs a press and boy was it an ordeal getting those old ones out....even with access to a press usually used for trucks it couldn't be done.......I'll see how they perform

Cheers
