Hey all, got myself a discovery 300Tdi about a month ago. Since then the engines cut out about once a week whilst driving. The radio stays on, and the oil and battery lights come on the dash, if i take the key out, leave it a minute it normally starts back up!

I've done some searching on here, will this be a problem with my imobiliser spider? Where can I get the replacement and how much will they set me back?

Cheers for any help.

Hi there DaveSurf, the first place I would look is the fuel sedimenter. It should be serviced regularly but never is, due to it's location. It requires the bowl to be taken off and cleaned, then replaced.

If you don't already know, it is location on the offside chassis rail, just in front of the rear wheel on the inside of the rail. It comes off after releasing the 11mm bolt on top of the unit. Sometimes you need to give the bowl a light tap with a rubber mallet as they stick onto the rubber seals.

Might be a good idea to replace the fuel filter after you do this work, as some crâp can be released in the process and it's cheap and easy to do, so why wouldn't you?

Good luck
Dave

I'm not sure what your actual problem is, but before you go down the spider route make sure you have got one .
Landrover did not fit the troublesome spider to the later 300 TDI. I have a late 97 300TDI and spent an age stripping out the dash only to find it had never had one
You can quickly check by looking at the diesel stop solenoid if you have got one wire going to it you have probably got a spider, 300tdis without the spider have a different imobaliser fitted which havet 3 wires going to the stop solenoid.

I'm not 100% sure but I thought you could determine spider or no spider by the number of buttons on the remote - ie 1 button no spider; 2 buttons spider.

tis easier to check on the back of the injectop pump , rather than pulling all the dash out then scratching yer head !!!! its called DDS and were produced for the jap market that never happoned !

I'm not sure that you understood what I was referring to. I was meaning the remote for the central locking, the fob; the plip; the whatever you want to call it !!!!!

Nothing to do with ripping out the dashboard, just look at the remote;)

thats what threw me , i got the 2 button fob and thought an hours work to fit a bypass plug ......... so ripped the dash out only to find nothing there , what a nightmare it was to lucky enough a friend of a friend came round and diverted it for me prety easy job to do but still a night mare to be left with a landy imobilised for 4 days

Maybe yours had already been taken out??

This article appears to imply that the spiders are only on 2-button fobs:

that was the post i followed to the letter , i found out landrover , when producing some of these 97 ish disco,s decided not to fit the spiders but a system called dds basically there is a fuel stop circuit board on the back of the injector pump( hence have a look at the back of the pump first ) which is worked on a pulseing method you cant just cut the wires and run a feed to them it dont work .......... any hwo i hope this chap dont have this problem if he has pm me ill talk you through hwo to overcome this ........ i merely trying to share my experience to avoid someone else all the troublea ive had

i had the same problem a few months ago, driving along and it just cut out, left it a few mns and it restarted perfectly, gradually it got worse untill it was cutting out every few miles so i repaired the spider unit.
it took all of an hour and a half from start to finnish including soldering the joint that was causing the fault :)

dead easy to do.

Alright troops, my mate had this problem with his, turned out he had a faulty fuel cut off solenoid. replaced it and job was a good en.

Was a **** to get out though
