59 Plate Range Rover sport 2.7 diesel starting Issues

Have sluggish starting and after it running there is a delayed response from the throttle. Stop and start again and it usually clears. Now the engine light is on, what could be causing this?

Diagnostics required for a start is the best advice I can give.

Is there a lot of black smoke ?

The engine light Is telling you there is an issue with a sensor that is or isn't reading or receiving information. It doesn't always mean that a sensor needs replacing. Diagnostics will help point you in the right direction.
Also check under the bonnet under the silly plastic cover for any little pipes that may have come away and or electrical plugs that may have come off. Any noises sucking or blowing, excessive oil and the like.
Have you had any recent work done on the car?

No work currently undertaken, did the same last week and the garage asked if we had taken the battery off as there was 33 fault codes associated with this. Just wondered if a dodgy battery was the root cause and this had a knock on effect

A dodgy battery or low volts will throw up all sorts of problems.
