I've noticed a knocking noise when in four wheel drive.

With the free-wheeling hubs set to 2x4 there is no knocking.

With the free-wheeling hubs set to 4x4 there is a knocking noise, with the yellow knob set to either rear wheel drive or four wheel drive.

However, when running on flat roads, moderate hills and gentle braking, in four or rear wheel drive, there is no knocking.

It only knocks when braking hard on steep downhill or bumpy sections of road/track. Possibly more on right-hand turns, according to my half-deaf ears!!!

It sounds like it's coming from the front axle/diff and whatever is knocking, it's rotating.

New Bearmach front and rear propshafts have been installed.

There is no free play at all in the rear propshaft. The front propshaft has free play of about 1/8th of a turn.

New wheel bearings have also been installed. And brakes too.

The front diff and half shafts are has when I bought the truck. I'm thinking the problem lies with them.

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

the free wheeling hubs are AVM.

I have the knocking noise with or without them fitted.

axles are standard Land Rover Series 3.
