Been watching the banter on cost of parts for a rebuild on some of the threads;)
Especially some of the flack zen has been getting for his quotes on cost of parts:)
So I am rebuilding a 4.0 gems to go in my 90 that will also have megasquirt:D
Started with this
A0F1CAB2-974B-4AED-B293-DBABCF434CB3-440-0000004B715BFD43_zps2a9ff23b.jpg

Stripped it and pleasure texted the block and guess what it failed:eek:cracked liner on no7, so a replacement block was found pressure tested and was all good, so far I have nearly finished cleaning all the parts, bores measured and honed, crank at machine shop getting a regrind ready for collection next week
A few more pics

So these are the bits I need ( don't think I've forgot anything)
Full gasket set
Mains bearings
Big ends bearings
Rings
Cam
Lifters
Timing chain
Head bolts
Con rod bolts( not sure if these can be reused as am told by some they need replacing and others say not)
Water pump

So where to get the parts and cost, I've been looking at v8tuner, real steal, and turner engineering and the prices vary quite a bit

Also like the idea of supper charging but I don't think the 4.0 without top hat liners would be a good idea so I think I'll knock that idea on the head for now;)

why 4l ???stick a 4.6 crank in it now while you can???

also what results you after???
blueprinting 8000rpm race engine or just a good reliable engine that dont cost so much one gets in ****e from mrs??

megasquirrt rules!but not alot of point if stock..(unless lpging, boosting etc)

what cam???stock or trick?
rockers and shafts good???unlikey!

and auto or manual??

Just going stock not looking for loads of power, just want a v8 in the 90 as I'm sick of the old oil burner, need to have a look at the rockers tbh as I have not gave them much thought,
Would like to stick a 4.6 crank in it but been keeping an eye on eBay and seen nowt come up.
Megasquirt as my little lad loves being a submariner in the 90

but its got coil packs??why megasquirt?just extend the loom to cab and mount ecu on roof??

auto or manual?if auto which one?

Haven't got the ecu and got a manual v8 lt77s, just had a wee look at the rockers and they look ok no wear on the shaft and pads don't look to bad,but here's a wee pic

i see...stock ecu will do you..much cheaper than megasquirt..

the rockers dont wear there..you need to strip shaft down and check the "bearings" and also where the pushrods go..they can "push" or wear out the steel cap pressed into the rocker..but this you dont discover till setting tappet preload (if you bother)

what year is it?cos it dont need becm if gems..and i see it is soo.and its easy to run without becm..much easier than megasquirt.

ie 3 relays

Haven't got a clue which year the original block that had slipped liner was from defo a p38 and the good block that I'm using is from a d2

well its a gems you show...

i fitting one into my 2 door...

immobiliser just sends a signal to engine ecu, if correct data engine ecu reports back good .becm then will switch on coils ,fpr ,airflow meter ,cranking relay etc...

however to switch on engine ecu all you need to do is live up ignition feed to it, it then will switch feed to master relay...so all you need to do is install a few relays and fuses that are energised by master relay to feed said components..dead easy and while your at it install your own immobiliser to control these componts too.

engine ecu gives 4 pulses out per rev for a tacho plus anything else you may need..
usefully it has provision to adjust torque curve ie on/off road by just switching 12v/gnd to a pin or two..

mal light can be run by just using relay or led..

diagnostics is dead easy too..just chop out p38 port and wire into loom..no becm required thats my understanding of it..been reading up the rave manual.

anyway..ring autopost..ask for Paolo..no one else, get past the older lady or rude older gent..
tell him simon recomended i ring them first (tell paolo tappets rockers 4.6 last week and he will remember)
EXPLAIN what you are doing and he will have everything off the shelf..they do different grades of bearings etc..ask for oem or better..though oem is made at same factory as genuine (though that might be tazaspeckydoolaystain, who knows where gen LR stuff is made these days???)
i find them very helpfull,Paolo knows his stuff and rebuilds v8's...they are good for standard stuff, not go fast bits..for that....anywhere apart from rpi..
richard at turners is good ..but expensive..

i have nothing to do with autopost, but i find them excellent..(and they honour garentee on products no quibbles.and they cheap..and localish.)

re gems ecu...you can even give ecu a signsl via switch on clutch pedal to retard timing to allow for race changes...useful at the pod!!, or utilise this for lauch control...again pod!!

Cheers zen been searching the web and can get 4.0 manual fly wheel off eBay for £110 only one I could find, and a gems ecu for £25 so that's a hell of a lot cheeper than megasquirt, but cannot find anything on the web about making the ecu standalone, that's the bit that worries me as I'm alright with the spanners but not so hot when it comes to the devils knitting, that's why I was considering ms as all the instructions are there, thanks for all your advise mate will give auto post a call next week.

not surprised nothing on web, cos that is really telling you how to hotwire the range rover after all..

but looking at schematics and description of operation it looks to be real easy...infact two links in the relay/fuse box will hotwire it...so much for the security then!!

now thats if and only if the engine ecu does not need a correct code from becm to "wake" it up..and i do not think it does going by the description of operation..

and if it does then abit of surgery in ecu will sort that..but i am pretty certain it will be fine, seems it just needs a live on one pin to fire it up, the main security is becm controlled, and that is ridiculousy simple to get around..
