Hi guys, i've been repairing the head gasket on my 300tdi for a couple days now, the engine is all fixed and back together with a new head etc.

it didn't start before the head blew so I assumed it must have been a starter issue as it would bump start and run normally. I got my starter reconditioned and after installing my fresh starter tried to start it... but nothing happened again!

Basically when I turn the ignition to position 2, the battery, oil and handbrake light show up, but nothing else, the coils do not show up nor does the fuel pump prime

all I can hear is a clicking relay from the passenger foot well,

so I went back to my computer did a little research and came the conclusion that the SPIDER unit was duff, so I ripped it out and soldered it all back up... still nothing!!

Any ideas? any help is much appreciated

Regards

Sam

Have you checked all the connections in the engine bay located on the bulkhead to the passenger side?

The starter wire on mine runs between the engine and the exhaust manifold, have you checked that there is no issues with continuity.

Is the starter turning over?

well after an hour routing around again, and resoldering the SPIDER with a bogmonster bypass trick

the starter now turns over!

but the glow plug lights still arent lighting and the fuel pump still isnt priming so it wont start, any ideas?

we rang an auto electrician and he was saying when you bypass the spider, the glow plugs will turn off when trying to start?

any clues?

Cheers

There is no electric fuel pump on a 300TDI so you wont hear a fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition on.
It could be that your bodging with the spider has messed things up and the fuel stop solenoid isn't opening when you turn the ignition on.

to test this you can run a wire from the positive side of the battery direct to the fuel solenoid and trying starting her, if it runs then seems to be the spider as above.

 forgot what im driving! anyway, with the spider bypassed she now starts and runs, stop solenoid is fine etc
