Guys,

98 300 tdi auto

I have tried searching the forum but can't find a thread that tells me which maker of pump to buy. Plenty telling me which one NOT to buy....

Is this one of those parts that I need to buy OE or is there a Bearmach or similar part that I should get ?

If so, what sort of price am I looking at and from where ?

Do the pumps come with gasket ? I've already got a spare metallised P gasket.

Sorry, but as with all Disco faults, it didn't come at a convenient time. it failed this evening, as light was going, and too late for me to go and buy a L/R mag to search the ad's !!

cheers.

Guys,

Thanks very much for this. Awesome response time, as always.
I was getting a bit miffed at the online ad's showing prices from £12 to £30, but nobody saying who the maker was. Obviously I wasn't going to buy the £12 one with a recycled flip-flop for an impellor though !!

I think I'll buy a set of bolts at the same time, I know I'll regret not having spares otherwise.

Cheers.

Stay away from ****part and you will be fine mate.
Cheapest non ****part is about £15.
Advice.....Never ever ever ever ever ever ever buy anything from ****part cos they are ****.
Buy cheap, buy twice is always the case with ****part.
Did I say don't buy ****part..:D

Buy oem, i tried a QH pump and it only lasted 2 mths! Replace P gasket and bolts at the same time if you want peace of mind. Use a non setting gasket sealant not silicone. I recommend Hyloma, its great for oil or water jobs, does not set and will cope with any temperature. Also recommend diluting anti freeze with deionised water not tap water. This really helps with preventing corrosion, well worth a couple of quid.

Excellent advice, agree completely

Cheers guys.
I've gone for a replacement item with the G on the end of the part number. Ordered new bolts as well.

Mmmm I was under the impression that OEM was QH

Can any one confirm who the OEM was for the water pump, I bought my pump here in Brunei and it had a QH box, it looked cheap and nasty and only lasted two months before the bearings and the seal had gone. It was not the same as the one in LR box that I later fitted! The Impellor was different and the casting was smooth around the edges, not rough like the QH job. I suppose it could be possible that mine was not a genuine QH part, or QH now have the pump manufactured in China or some other foresaken place with no quality control.

I've got to say that the pump I have bought is QH and was marked as OE. Can't comment on what it looks like as it hasn't arrived yet. I did buy it from a decent auto supplier as well.

I can say what a f*ckin pig of a job it is to replace seeing as my last bolt, yes the bottom one, is resisting all attempts to shift it with ring spanners. The head is now starting to round off.
Looks like i am going to end up by having to remove the crank pulley and the rad so i can get a socket on it. GRrrrrrrr.......
