HI

A company in Coventry who specialise in Land rovers have just sorted my starting problems, not cheap but good.

They offer an ECU chip upgrade for my discovery (1998 auto) this offers a marginal increase in BHP and torque -

To quote - The JE Stage 1 tune raises power from 110 to 122 bhp and torque goes up from 265 to 320 Newton Metres (particularly good for towing)

Is this a worthwhile expense for towing my twin axle caravan or will the benefit / effect not be that noticeable.

Secondly can I still do the electric fan upgrade or is it best left alone when the vehicle is used for towing?

Thanks in advance

Mark

There is life out here!

I have trusted in JE engineering for the past 4 years and would rely on any advice given. A chip should give better all-round driveability, lower soot emissions and better mpg - plus easier towing.

Hi Mark,
If you dont mind how much is the Chip, as I would also like a bit more power when towing my Caravan.
I also live in Coventry so the address of the place that does it would also be helpfull.

Trevor.

I think the easesst option is a Tunit unit thses can be deliverd to your home and fitted your self.
These also have a adjuster on them so you can adjust to your particular needs.

For the disco tdi auto you need a Tunit 2 unit these are priced @ £375+vat

Here is a peice of text to go with the Tunit2

The unit II is extremely flexible, it will fit almost any vehicle prior to common rail engines and although it does not come with
matching manufacturers plugs its great strength is that it can be used on almost any Tdi or non Tdi engine other than the latest common rail type engines.

This unit, in common with the I and III, is also easily adjustable giving it even greater flexibility when it comes to customising it
to most engines and applications. As well as all this, the unit is an incredible 48x35 mm in size and as light as a pebble.

Fitting is by the attachment of four (in some cases six) wires. These can be done via the spade clips provided or by soldering. Adjustment is via a small screw on the body right for more power, left for less.

Hi,
I have been towing a Bessacar Cameo 625 twin axle (about 1800kgs all up)
with a 300tdi auto discovery for about 3 months now and not found any
problems with the set up.acceleration is a bit down as to be expected but
not unacceptably so.Does about 21-24 mpg.I have not had any problems
with the standard cooling system,it stays in the normal range even when towing up long hills but I do hold it in 2nd if the hill is particularly steep to avoid overheating the
auto box.By all means do a chip upgrade but for the expense of the conversion
you probably will see little difference.Remember the auto and manual are designed to
tow 3500kgs.
