Ive had a TD5 binnacle and gauges laying about for a couple of years and finally got around to installing using retro anacondas guide which is excellent and what a guy for taking the time to lay everything out as he has with wiring diagrams etc

Anyway my issue is when I rebuilt the truck I sourced a disco transfer box and had it rebuilt etc to give longer legs on the motorway but I am at the point this weekend of removing the speedo cable and replacing with the TD5 transducer but it hit me like a ton of bricks that the disco trany is in there and the speedo drive shaft is different to the defender one, I’ve removed the one from the defender trany in advance but the more I google and look into this the more confused I’m becoming.

I’ve just come across someone saying the original defender 300tdi drive is the wrong size to mate up to the TD5 transducer which I’m starting to think the one that’s already in the disco trany could actually be the correct size to mate up, I’ve also noticed the disco uses a different transducer to the defender TD5 so now I’m as confused as a baby raccoon, has anyone come across this conundrum before or does anyone know the answer? Thanks for reading and any advice welcome

The speedo drive has a smaller hole for the transducer than standard.
Can you pull out the speedo drive in the Tbox?
Have you got a transducer to check the hole sizes?

Thanks for the response Phill, yes I have the green TD5 transducer ready and the standard defender speedo drive but there appears to be differing views so I was after a definitive answer, I’ve got to say the transducer seems like a perfect fit in the defender speedo drive which seems contrary to what I’ve read on the web, I suppose at worst I’ve got the hassle of swapping the drives over and hope for the best.

My 110 speedo cable did not fit into the transducer drive. Cable to big for the drive
Photo is a drive out the box I may also have a transducer to suit
You can pull the drives out with the collar on if not seized.
Long nose pliers & slowly turn this(forgot which way)

Right sorted, as I thought though with it being Land Rover it’s contrary to what I read on the web, the disco one is the exact same fitting but with the red gear on the end for the smaller disco wheels, suppose it depends on what year etc for different sizes. Anyway it was worth the hassle in the end to get the correct defender gear back in for a more correct speedo reading, probably could have done with the blue gear for the larger tyres but it won’t be a million miles away, cheers

300 tdi discovery with a transducer uses a black speedo drive which has a smaller square section drive than cable driven, defender later models with transducer still use the blue frc3310 for the larger tyre 7.50 and equivalent so uses the same size square drive as cable driven, so its only 300tdi transducer type discoverys that have the black smaller square speedo drive
