300tdi or td5?

I have a 300Tdi 110 and TD5 Disco (2003) For longer drives the TD5 engine is much easier. Saying that the 110 has done 216k and the TD5 50k.

I think its down to preference. Try and drive both and see which you feel is better.

I'm looking at a Td5 on a Y plate that has 160k on the click but has a full service history is it still a good car to go for with this high mileage?

I'd say go for the 300tdi too - I've had my 90 for 2 and a half years and other than the water channels in my head blocking thanks to some 'tard over doing it with some instant gasket before I got it, its never missed a beat!

+ even then it was a fairly simple job to fix even to a relativly inexperienced DIY mechanic....

Get you bum on some seats and see which appeals most.
Don't buy in haste, hire something (perhaps a 4x4) for the 4 week trip, and see what comes up as folks who bought them for the winter get fed up with them and let them go.
Golden rules: don't buy in the rain and don't buy the first you see....
Good luck.

^^^^What he said. For what it's worth, I've had 200 & 300 Tdi's and currently own a Td5 which is my daily drive and green laner (as were the previous Tdi's). Personally, as much as I liked both the Tdi's, I'd take a Td5 every time. The Tdi's I think were slightly more economical but the Td5 has more grunt. Try both out and see what suits you best.

I always thought that grunt wise the 200tdi was the best, then the 300tdi which traded off grunt for better/smoother driving and higher top speed then the Td5 which was even more road minded coz of its bmw heritage???

I might be wrong like but the couple of td5's I've driven never felt as powerful as my defender (which admittedly has been tweaked a bit before I got it) or even my mates disco...

Like you say though it is all down to taste and what your going to do with it. I'd prob get a 200tdi for a pay and play landy or a late td5 if I wanted to drive it mainly onroad. Since I wanted a fairly well mannered landy I could drive everyday but was still capable of dragging a horsebox out of a muddy field or getting me and my mountain bike up a rocky track in the highlands if needs be I went for my tdi :D
