I've had a few problems recently where my key wont turn in the ignition barrel to start the engine. The key fits in the barrel perfectly, but sometimes just wont turn

Last night it took over 30mins of wiggling to get it to turn. Tried WD40 in the barrel, but to no help

I assume the only way to fix would be to change the barrel

But I then assume that this will leave me a different key for the ignition, and would have to keep the original key to operate the doors/fuel cap

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Ade

Hi, the wafers in the lock are breaking up, I paid to get mine done but you can do it yourself.. if you do a search I'm sure its been covere before

WD40 doesn't help as it removes the barrel existing lubrication, graphite powder should be used. either the barrel orthe key is worn the easy option is to try your spare key. There is a recent excellent tread somewhere showing how to strip down the barrel and refurb it, i'll see if I can find it, also don't park with the steering lock engaged there's no need to do that and it sometimes hinders the key turning when returning to the vehicle.
My main key ,some times doesn't turn in the barrel but if i remove it and turn it around it does, I don't have any problems with my spare key.

what reg is it and is it auto?

had a similar problem with my old 97 import, there was a solenoid in the back that stopped you taking the key out unless it was in P or N so cut connection and used wd40 (sorry discool) in the barrel with a lot of key in/out and wiggling.

Worked fine and not another problem with it.

just take the barrel to a good locksmith mine cost £15
£230 in landrovers and i waited six months and they still couldnt get it
mine was done in 15 mins
