Hi guys

soon i will be removing my mates 300 tdi engine to replace the clutch and stuff but noticed the engine doesn't have any engine lifting points fitted i have looked at mine and that doesn't have any either.

now when i did my s11a swb to 200 tdi the 200 tdi had lifting points and i used a piece of chain to lift the engine with on my hoist.

so should a 300 tdi have lifting points or is it a matter of using lifting slings or rope to lift the engine out with if so i will need to get something to lift it with:eek:

Remove Tbox n Gbox to do clutch, i did it the other week.
On my own, bar the lifting in and out bit where i got my dad to give me a hand.

Sam

thanks sam for the advise but i need to remove the engine as i have some other stuff to do on the engine so will be easier to remove and work on the engine on the floor ;)

Fair enough if ya got other things to do, and an engine crane (which i didnt) if it was just clutch then i would of protested over the Gbox Tbox method :p

Cheers Sam

yeah he bought the car last summer and we fitted a de-catt and blanked the egr valve at cristmas time and noticed a couple of oil leaks and and also we didn't clean the intercooler and inlet manifold so plan to do them whilst the engine is out.

like said above there are bolt hols at the front and back of the head and i made two lifting eyes on the last 300tdi i did but i have seen people lift them on the exhaust manifold (tight against the head) and on the thurmostat housing (but i never told you too) thats why i made some (dont take long with a gas axe)
and as for removing the engine to do the clutch its the way i have done it on tdi discos but when i did my td5 i droped the boxes (too many wires and pipes on a td5)

make sure your hoist is tall enough to remove the engine as it got to go a hell of a way up in the air to clear the slam panel unlike a 90 or 110

thanks robint

in that case then once the engine is ready to be pulled i will remove both front wheels and put the front end on blocks as if the car comes up to much i run the risk of the roof of the car hitting the trussels in the garage one of them anyway

right i have plenty of steel to make some from so if need be i will make some better to be safe than sorry, just can't under stand why there wasn't any on the engine unless they have been removed for some reason and never put back on.

Just made a bracket up yesterday! They were never fitted in the first place. Haynes manual suggests making a bracket up and putting it under the rear head bolt. It does not mention the front point, so I have just put an old seatbelt sling under the front timing cover where the alternator and water pump are

does putting the bracket under the cylinder head bolt not have any effect on the H G once the bolt has been undone as we haven't really budgeted for a H G gasket replacement :)

That was my thought too, as there is nothing wrong with my head gasket, I just thought 'well they would not recommend it otherwise...would they?'! Probably not very scientific, but it is only one bolt out of 10 or so!

you can undo the two bolts and retighten without hurting head gasket my mistake earlier ,disco while still having the holes at rear of head is too close to bulkhead,

right i was looking under my mates disco today to have a look at the engine to gearbox bolts but the more i look at it the more i think take the engine and gearbox out in one lump,

the question is if i make some engine lifting eyes from thick angle iron for the rear one and thick bar for the front one will the rear cylinder head bolt and front lifting eye bolts combined hold the engine and gearbox together.
