getting ready to do the timing belt operation in my 300tdi. it's a 21L code, which is a disco EGR (in my d90).

there's no date sticker on the engine any more, and it obviously doesn't match the truck's date ('84). so, is it safe to assume (or does anyone know for sure) that it's a late-model timing belt setup? i.e. with a "rimless" tensioner?

...does this even matter? will it break anything if i put a newer model tensioner on an older 300?

Casting date will be on the back side rear of the cylinder head, between 3 and 4 injector.

not that you can read that $hitty cell phone pic, but it's a 3 over a 95, so march 1995 cast? is that considered an early or late model, as pertains to the timing belt tensioner?

Well 300 engine came out on an 93 L plate and stopped being fitted in mainstream land rovers in 97/98 so its a middle engine!
Try a google as im sure the relevant engine numbers are out there.

no it wont hurt anything that is what your supposed to do ,fit crank pulley with guides instead of early without and tensioner without instead of earlier with ,belts the same ,its just better to have belt steered by driving pulley than another for belt life

lynall - the googles was not being kind to me this time. lots of info on VIN numbers and general engine number identification, but nothing for specific date+sn correlation.

james - thanks for the explanation. i figured it would be an easy answer like that, but... you know. always good to double check.

cheers, fellas.

Have you ever had one of the later crank pulleys fail, ie disc coming off and shreading the belt??

have had damage to belt with what must have been damaged lip on pulley ,easy to bend when fitting ,and one like you suggest but where other alignment issues , vast majority have been belt damage with lipped tensioner, and changing to later type has cured it
