Defender 200tdi turbo swap today (attempted).

Any ideas how to remove oil drain pipe? Nut is big with bugger-all space between it and turbine housing. Ring spanner no good due to pipe. Not even sure what size it is- bigger than 3/4 (other nuts imperial)! Large nut= long spanner and I have a great big black box left side of bulkhead in the way (when I eventually get something on it).

Suggestions most welcome, Ta!

Got my 300tdi one off with a pair of vice grips, it wasn't that tight.
Hope that helps:)

Thanks folks
Tried the mole grips but can't get grips on flat of nut and also no chance of turning grips due to lack of space. Could try smaller mole grips!

Had a look at removing manifold but there is a manifold nut in the middle adjacent to turbo housing again with very little space. I assume manifold nuts are well torqued-up and all i would be able to get on it would be an open spanner. May give it a go at last resort.

I think DEFENDER 200tdi- turbo on top left of engine. Keep meaning to check engine number!

Removing manifold- Any special considerations, loosening/refitting/accurate torque etc? Is there a gasket?

Thanks

The big nut going onto the engine block is 27mm and the smaller one going onto the turbo is 21 or 22mm. The one onto the turbo is quite difficult to get at but you can just about manage it working from underneath the car.

update:
pipe still not removed. nut size 7/8 but no room around it to turn spanner. vice grips won't hold (thin nose) or too large to turn against housing. next plan is to cut off shoulders from spanner to allow it around the nut- hopefully not torqued up otherwise spanner will crack!

others suggest manifold removal but not sure how this increases space around nut. also a bit daunted, but thanks for the guide Buster, great pics and exactly my set up. didn't think sump nut was so accessible from underneath so may be going this route if I have time tomorrow.

fingers crossed for the 'customised' tool option!

I think the nut is metric 21 or 22 mm,as previously stated. Brake pipe spanners that size do exist but are hard to find. I have a ring spanner that I cut a slot in just bigenough to slip over the pipe but an open ended spanner with shoulders ground down might do it too! Good luck ;)

Got to it again this evening and decided to give the manifold-removal route a try. Everything came away easily- manifold nuts a little too easy I thought but did not check torque at the time.

Only hiccup is the bracket securing the turbo oil pipes to the inlet manifold. It is on a long bolt that takes a 12mm spanner on the shaft but the thing is tight+++, and because of it length I am worried about snapping the bloody thing. Currently soaking in penetrating oil. Come tomorrow I may have new turbo fitted and can stop topping up oil every 50 mile or so! Oh, and I have some rather nice new hoses that will compliment it beautifully:D

hi there i have the same problem, with my 200 tdi discovery.
the big nut on the block is a 28 mm, like you said a pain in the bum to get to. but the nut on the bottom of the turbo is a 22mm. thats easy to get off.
mine is blowing oil out big time, as the pipe has split on mine,, but to get the 28 mm nut off you need to be patient and use the open end , but make sure its a good fit.
thanks. i hope that helps ray
