Hi all,

my engine's blowing out air at the rear of the engine from the cylinder head gasket - any suggestions? so far havent lost any water or oil and it runs ok if a little underpowered due to lack of compression. just about to check the cylinder head bolts for tightness. i havent overheated recently to my knowledge. maybe just a buggered gasket? or a warped head? should i use radweld as a temporary fix?

thanks!

ok so unsurprisingly the cylinder head bolts havent worked their way loose! in fact impossible to check tightness as they're tightened by degrees rather than torques!! forgot about that!

gotta be a new head gasket required... more fun!

Tis a usual place for them to blow, but an easy job, get new gasket and bolts don't reuse old and for the sake of 40 quid get the head skimmed any prob doing job just ask but is one easy job.

thanks for that! i'll have to look into cost of head skimming here in rip-off ireland though... 40quid usually means double it while converting to euro's then add another 20% "paddy tax"!!! oh, and i'll probably have a 60 mile trip to get it done and it'll take a week longer than it should! not that i'm jaded or anything...

manual suggests only have it skimmed if the head is warped, but i wont know that till i get it off.

any ideas how long i can drive around like this till i get into serious doo-doo?

defender10069's head gasket started blowing in same place.. £50 quid for the bits, took us a saturday to swop..

the gasket had corroded which apperently is a common failure..

well it deosnt sound like too much of a pain then... just hope i can keep getting around in it while the parts arrive... anyone have any idea how long before it goes totally kaput?

It's one of those how longs a bit of string, just don't drive it hard and if it starts getting hot stop, don't over heat it cause then you can damage head, think sometimes you can get away without skimming head but not sure of the tolerances, sure someone like James will come along and advise.

how long did you drive it for ??
i dont know wether i can drive mine for a week can i ?
would it cause any long term damage ?

mr shifty can you put a decisive answer on wether i can drive mine for a week or so while its blowing ? i know your a boss and all that haha !

So long as you dont overheat and there is no signs of water in the oil it should be OK if you dont work it too hard. I would not go towing anything or thrashing ot along the motorway. As already said its a bit of a lottery. The problem is the gasket can get worse and maybe strand you in the arse end of nowhere without warning.

words of wise men ! right ok well ill nurse it down the roads then, do you have to touch timing belt when doing head gasket on one of these ? iv only ever done 19j
