Hei there,
My 200Di is spitting out a wee bit too much black smoke. Had a look at the Inj.Pump and saw that the mechanic had connected the diaphragm (fuel load delivery housing) to the inlet manifold.
Now I'm really not sure why as there is no turbo and wonder if I should blank it off before trying to adjust the smoke screw. Any one been in the same situation or have any ideas ?

It sounds like someone has played with the pump settings... Here is a very good page that explains all the sttings on the VE pump that the 200(T)DI and early Cummins Turbo diesel share. Turning up the pre 94 Ram diesel injector pump Also, you may want to run diesel injector cleaner through it first. I converted my 88 to a 200TDI and the injectors were quite dirty... a few tanks of cleaner had it sorted good, and then I adjusted the pump settings...

In the end the only difference I could make was by turning the fuel delivery down. Still got all the performance but no smoke...!!!!

When does the smoke appear and what colour is it.
If its only with your boot to the floor its not necessarily a problem and wont even fail the test, if its blue then the engines fecked, if its white your injectors/pump are fecked, or if its black which by the sound of it, it is then your right its a mixture problem, you are better with the turbo pressure sense pipe blocked, if someones finger poked with the pump then your gonna have to get it adjusted, you can do it yourself, however if its been totally fecked up then your better going to a diesel specialist, you'll save the cost in fuel savings.

It was black smoke, pretty bad with the engine under load. So I blocked off the vacuum compensator and turned the fuel delivery down and hey presto..!!! Presumably the fuel delivery was turned up to cope with the now removed turbos' demand.
Thanks to all for the help.

Good you've sorted it, however I dont think what you said quite fits, the turbo does demand extra fuel, but via the pressure sense line to the turbo, extra fuel should only come when theres boost pressure, no boost pressure no extra fuel, and if theres no turbo there aint any boost pressure.
Must have been the adjustment that was out, which is probably a good thing as nowts wrong with yer pump or engine.
