Hey all,

Today I viewed an extremely nice P38 W reg rangie. Going for about 3k I thought that was a good price.

It has just under 100k on the clock but has never had any work on the engine I believe.

It had a few flaws and niggles which I'm not too worried about. However, I looked under the oil filler cap and noticed a White think substance which I only know in rangies to be a head gasket problem. I'm still however wondering if it's worth it and just fixing the gasket itself... Hoping it's nothing worse of course.

Should I really just be staying well clear of it?! It still drove well.

I'm new to range rovers but willing to learn and do my own work on it. A friend of mine just recently replaced his head gaskets so know how it's done.

Opinions?

Thanks,

Astarin

V8 or diesel? extensive short journeys and not letting the engine warm up can cause mayonaise to form in the oil filler cap, this is just condensation build up. Dip the oil and have a look to see if it's in the sump too, if in doubt steer well clear. Diesels don't usually cause concern for head gasket trouble but the V8's can be a nightmare. If the liners have slipped then it's time for a new engine or a rebuild. I'd steer clear and find a lower mileage one.

It was a 4.0 V8. For the last 6 months it's been used to travel about 2-3 miles a day to and from work. It's done 2k miles in 6 months.

If it has done 100k miles and never had an engine replacement it's only a matter of time I guess.

My gas powered 4.6 gets creamy if you stretch the oil changes out. It's only realy used for short journeys. This may well be the situation with your one but I would tread very carefully. Take it for an extended test drive in all conditions and watch the tempreture gauge like a hawk. I suppose the best advice though is to not take a chance and walk away.

I think I'm already mad enough for wanting a fuel guzzling giant. I think I'll wait and find the right fuel guzzling giant.

Thanks for the advice guys. :D

Well... After another inspection with a mate of mine who loves his Rangies, I went and risked it.

Got a few hundred off asking price too at £2900.

Have now been running it around all over the place for a week and spent 100quid on fuel already. AND!! All the White Mayo substance under the oil filler has gone and has been running like a peach... Albeit a loud one.

Extremely happy newbie Range Rover owner now!

only £100 in petrol you not driving it your out playing get your food down, i can use that much going round the block. lol good luck with it i hope its a good one for you. .

Figured I'd post some pics. These are up on the Alnwick moors with a mate of mine... who also owns a P38...

Mine's on the right.
