My freelander has done around 120k, love the car but it is driving me insane.

Have a problem that I just can't seem to remedy so any help would be appreciated.

When running the car will run ok for a short while then as soon as i try to get power it starts to slow down to 10-30mph the suddenley speeds up (frightens the bggr behind!!) Have replaced the front pump and fuel filter. MAF has also been replaced about 10 months ago.

It seems to be struggling for fuel or is getting air into the system, anyone have any ideas for the most likely place to look for a leak. There is a black plastic box on top of the fuel pump that seems to keep getting diesel round it, but just want to see if i need to look elsewhere also

Try checking the vacuum pipes to the turbo/intercooler and such. Had the same problem with mine and that cured it. Hope it helps

Hi thanks for replys

to update been on computer came up with mass air meter (again ) also fuel pressure sensor which was told could be fualty or we have a fuel leak has said before have had fuel around pipes from the unit the filters is srewed to on inner front wing so looking little better

Hi, were is the filter

Not sure on your model but on the Td4 they are in the rear wheel arch.

Mine is a Td4 of 2001 (at least I got it on jan 9th 2001) which means it's been assembled in 2000 and the fuelfilter on those is not in the rear wheel arch but in the enginebay. Look at the right hand side underneath the big black L-shaped plastic box housing the ECU. It's hanging there into a kind of double plastic canister. The fronthalf houses the fuel filter, the backhalf has got the ²dary fuel pump in it. Removing the entire unit is done by means of a small screw for which you have to "search" a little but take a look at the attached pictures and it will make the above clearer. (I hope;) )

To check whether that maf is faulty again you could disconnect it and drive some time like that, consumption will not be optimal but performance should be normal.

Have had a MAF gone before and remmeber how badly it ran

Thanks again all for taking time reply and any advice welcome and usefull

Have left freelander with the very trustable (friend of fathering law) garage who are going to check for fuel leak and clear the fault codes and do a test drive. Will be worth seeing results and will have enough respect to share outcome

Also does anyone know what duel pressure should be was told is a 4.3 bar which seams low for desel

thanks Stu

appologies for layout, it didnt paste well

1, has the fuel filter been replaced recently ?
2, can you hear the fuel pumps running when you turn on igniton (1 under the rear passenger seat and other mounted on nearside inner wing ) and how long dose it run for ?
3, have you checked all vacuum pipes ?

if its not a fuel issue, it may be the turbo boost control ? (the sensor located on the air box) has a very small hole which can become blocked,or a failed solenoid, but check the fuel system and vacuum pipes first

Thanks for reply and info very usefull

Fisrt thing I did was change the fuel filter and yes both pumps running did run car with back seat up and cover off to listen to pump also removed and clean in tank pump the lift pump on wing is a new part however now found out is a pump for later model 02 onwards dont know if anyone aware what the differance is
Runs quite well seams to have the concern when putting foot down will go down to 10 mph and over rev runs with kangaroo juice not had it stall
Notice a couple replys mentioning vacuum pipes so will have a look at them the weekend and also sensor in air box
Have disconected MAF and yes is running and picking up well so looks like has gone thanks for advice just ordered new part and garage waiting to remove code from ECU so thinks looking up finally

Thanks again for advice will have enough respect to post outcome of checks and MAF change

Regards Stu

Ever thought of contacting Roverron rather than replacing the expensive Bosch maf ??;)

Dear Willo
Thanks for advice
Had a quick look at Roverron need to have a good read actually got a MAF on the way from a Ebay 4x4 shop for £65 but still going to concider your advice.

Regards Stu

shepo, make sure the maff is a bosch unless you get one of rond little boxes, i got one from ebay it didnt work, the bosch has a temp sensor built in , some of the others dont

I believe that ron delivers a box with a separate temp.sensor on it if you decide to go for the (cheaper but better) Pierburg maf. There are some combinations possible so guess it's best to contact him to see what the options are ? Good luck.

Hi all
Thanks for advice very pleased replaced the MAFF and put the removed lift pump back on and codes cleared now running well
Still going to have a look at the roverron web site has many of you have adviced
Now got a fuel pump to sell

Thanks again Stu

I had similar proplems with intermittent loss of power and the engine misfiring. Had the fuel pressure sensor changed which did not cure the problem. Have since found that the connector block on the loom which connects to the FPS has a bad connection. I have been told that there is a repair block available. I am trying to source one now.
Try wiggling the wires at the back of the connector when the engine is running, if it is faulty the engine will start to miss.

Good luck

I have since found out Landrover has released a technical service bulletin in regard to the problem of correded connections and there is a harness repair kit now available. Been fitted and car is running perfectly, wis I had known about it earlier. Could have saved two roadside recoverys and quite a lot of money!!
