Hi just wondering if anybody has come across this before:

Occassionally (happened twice in about 2K miles) my P38 will not start when hot - engine turns over very quickly, and rev counter bounces around all over the place, but no hint of it starting. Leave it 5 minutes, and it behaves as it usually does on a hot start - a bit of cranking but then it fires up and runs perfectly.

I am well aware of the normal BMW hot start issues and associated threads on here, this is something a bit different that has only happened a couple of times in the last few weeks, hence the new thread....

Any ideas??

Cheers

Jerry

Take a gander at the Spill Pipes and the clear pipe to the FIP...

Could be the well documented Spill Pipes (Leak Off Pipes) have split letting air to enter....cranking the engine pumps diesel in to displace the air only it can take a while - leave it a few minutes now all the air has been replaced with diesel she'll start...

Rev counter is driven by engine ECU from signals received from crank sensor and number four injector. It should not jump about when cranking. Put it on diag and see what is on log. Maybe crank sensor failing or number four injector. Would personally say crank sensor. But check all plugs for good contact before you start shelling cash out.

Sorry for the delayed response, thanks as ever for the helpful replies.

Just go back from being away for a few days, and have hooked up Nanocom, no faults logged apart from the ever present 'cruise control' fault!

Will check wiring to CPS and Inj 4....

Cheers,

Jerry
