Hi. Im writing this at the side of the M2 waiting for a very nice man to take me to the garage. ..

Driving at about 50mph on my way home there was a sharp loss of power... a couple of back fires with a little black smoke.... so I pulled over....

Now everything seems to be doing what it should... but theres no attempt to fire!!!

Any suggestions where I should start looking and what for???

Thanks Andy

As above or timing chain slipped a couple of sprockets? (happened to me once, idler sprocket broke up) Electric dizzy failed?
First stop on the diagnostics list would be, is there a spark? Then, is it happening at the right time? then look at the fuel system.

Dizzy is tight and I have a strong spark from the coil but I think the plug spark is quite week to be honest... you have to really look to see it

O g or a spark plug spanner....just picked landy up from having nee gb springs fitted.... almost got it home before it went bang :( the ride is nice though lol

All tools were taken out before leaging it at the garage lil

Update:

Just heard from Andy, the Landy is on the back of a rescue truck and heading back to the garage. I expect Andy will update as and when possible. Probably too late in the afternoon for garage to do anything now though.

We shall all wait with baited breath...

Had a similar experience , turned out to be the electronic ignition wire within the distributor , it had been cut by the distributor arm somehow . seems a bit strange but it sort of just lies in the distributor unsecured , came in contact was cut and bang and everything stopped. Replaced it and put a sheath of insulation tape around it so it could be held more rigidly and away for the arm. All good since

evening all.... ok here's the latest.... Problem was traced to a blocked jet, apparently it had sucked up some dirt and blocked the carb, .... I went to collect this evening and it was running rather rich and missing, a quick tweek of the mixture and I took it, hoping the run home would improve things,,, but it didn't. I took the landy back to the mechanics house and told him it wouldn't make the 40 mile trip home....

Now I'm sure this inst too much of a problem in itself, but there is a rather loud unidentifiable knock that no one can locate. I want to get this landy up and running quickly and i'm starting to think of a second hand petrol engine, something from a running landy, maybe that's been removed for a tdi replacement could be the answer.... There are a few on ebay but would rather get something with a bit of history from a member...........

So who's got what, I'm in Kent so the closer the better.....

Thanks Andy

What sort of knocking - see if you can locate where it's coming from and if it gets worse under load / as you rev it.

Getting a modern mechanic to tune a carb and set timing is an art in itself...better of to learn how to play with them yourself. If its running rich check to ensure that the choke is snapping open fully.

Bear in mind that a second hand engine (especially if its been replaced by a diseasel) probably wasn't running very well when it was removed.

My problem is time, I use to have loads of it, I don't know where its gone. the knock is "free running" as it doesn't seam to be directly linked to the engine revs, yes it gets worse as the revs go up but it stays knocking at its own speed as the engine revs drop off...

that's about the best description I can come up with.... its also running on 3 so maybe the distributor drive???

I think it will need to be stripped before the problem will be found, and I just dont have the time :-(

any thoughts??

i like the electronic setup that junks the points and gets rid of dwell setup. think it was only 35quid

its got a electronic set up, plus new carb plugs leads. complete new timing chain and tensioner fuel filters oil's changed not to mention new GB parabolic springs...... O 110 seats new paint job............. all this and it runs like poo LOL

What do Ex land rover owners drive these days LOL

Could be spark knock. Dump and clean fuel tank. refill with fresh fuel. blow out fuel lines, replace fuel filter, clean and adjust carb. Is this a home mechanic or a professional that makes his living from ( as in feeding his family)

ok yes hes a pro, he use to live close to me but has moved and popping in is a 80 mils round trip!

Latest suggestions are low battery power (either duff battery or duff charging system) causing the back fire, weak spark etc

Megga rattle is now pointing towards cam shaft and accompanied bits ie valve sliders and rollers being warn and making a racket (also not helping the timing and running on all cylinders)

.... Well its a starter for 10 :)
