1999 TD5 Misfire

I'm hoping someone will be able to shed some light on my problem. I have a '99 TD5 & I have an issue with misfire under heavy engine loads. If I accelerate hard I experience continuous misfire or even "kangaroo" effect on occasion. On idle the engine is smooth & under normal "round town" use I have no problems.
Does anyone have any ideas? The engine has done 110K & runs smoothly most of the time. It has a comprehensive service history & has been looked after, in all other respects the car is in excellent condition. I'm just reluctant to take it somewhere & end up paying huge bills chasing the problem. This is my first Land Rover so I have no idea even if there are any reliable "specialists" in my area.

A common fault that causes a misfire on a TD5 is oil getting in the injector harness via worn o-rings. It is easy to check for too. Take off the battery cover and you will see the ECU next to the jack. Remove one screw to remove the ECU then unplug the red plug that goes into it. If there is any oil in the plug this is probably your problem. A new harness is about £40 and takes about an hour to fit (it is an easy job).
 
Thanks for the suggestions, the symptoms of the Waste Gate Modulator problem mimic my symptoms exactly, but I'll take a look at the harness too.
The nanocom sounds like a useful tool, can anyone suggest where I can buy one & an approximate cost?

To be honest if it was oil in the harness it would happen all the time.

There's supposed to be a new version of the Nanocomm coming out soon, The original one cost me £200 about 6 months ago and is well worth the money. They occasionally crop up on ebay from about £150 up over.

Where abouts are you as someone close by with a nanocom may be able to help you out.

Thanks for the info Brian, I'm actually in Coventry, but I'm happy to spend £200 if it makes fault finding easier. I'll keep an eye out & get hold of a Nanocom asap.
