Series 3 1973 S3 109 with TDi engine - valuation for a friend

Dear All, a friend has a 1973 S3 109 that he's wanting to sell. An LR garagiste has said it's worth £15k-£17k which I thought was somewhat high. I think it's worth £10k-£12k once thoroughly cleaned up and prep's for market with a full service. It does have a nice registration number for a "Roaming Landy..." which would add perhaps £500. What are your thoughts on this...?

That looks really nice, if the chassis/bulkhead is a good as the overall appearance I think it probably would sell for around the 10/12K mark.
If that's a load of filler masking the fact that the bulkhead is rotten perhaps a few K less.
Looks like it's had a lot or work done ....
 
Id say 8 to 10k. It still needs some stuff doing but overall its very nice. A lot would depend on the condition of the engine, transmission brakes and steering. For 12k I would expect a series 3 to be pretty much perfect, they dont have the rareity value of a series 1 or the appeal of the 2.

My thoughts too. I have yet to see the 109, will be popping over at the weekend. It's clearly had some money spent on it in the recent past...paint, cappings, TDi transplant et al. From the pics it's had some chassis plates welded and the cross-member looks in good used condition. My gut feel is that the bulkhead is actually okay and needs a good internal treatment to halt any further deterioration, drivers side floor/bulkhead has been plated and the passenger side has a new footwell + 2x new floors. It's a shame they didn't prep' & paint the underside of the bonnet when the rest of the truck was resprayed.

If it was mine I'd clean/prep the life out of it and thoroughly prep' for sale to 1. make easiest sale, and 2. ensure new owner is really happy with their new toy. The 109 would make for a great used/honest pub run with friends S3...or throw some bails in the back for summer parties. I like 109's for these type of social get togethers...

Another thing to bear in mind is it is a 109 pickup which is one of the least desirable. If it came with a full soft top or was a station wagon it may be worth more, if it was fully original it would be worth more, if it had galv chassis and or galv bulkhead it would be worth more. But a tidy usable condition 109 I would agree with the above 8-10k of above, and that is on a good day with the right buyer. The garage price is a pipe dream (I would say for anyone) but certainly for a private sale. For the price of some new britpart replacements I would also replace the ripped seats. They might not add any value to the vehicle but they will make it easier to sell and will prevent buyers negotiating down because it is a very obvious fault.
Might also be a personal preference thing but for a tdi conversion I would want the intercooler fitted as well!

I would also not add any value on for the reg. If "you" think the reg is worth something retain it and sell it separately, if it is on a vehicle and sold with the vehicle the registration does not add any value.

@dag019 , that's good input re' seat covers - I'll pass this on. I've just noted the no IC for turbo, it wouldn't take much to fit a new alloy unit. The reg# position is an interesting one...I like interesting reg#'s on period cars, including Land Rovers, and most naturally have one. I do like the idea of a "ROAM-ing..." number plate on a Landy.

In other news I've offered my weekend services to the owner to 1. really sort out and respray the underside of bonnet - there's nothing better than opening up and engine bay to a clean under bonnet, 2. steam clean engine & properly tidy the engine bay, 3. same with chassis, 4. clean and lube up the springs, 5. give proper big service including all fluids, 6. complete any paint touch ups and blend, 7. give a deep hot wash clean inside & out and finish off with a good mopping with Turtle Carnuba Wax. It would be a properly sorted little 109 then with the new owner not having to do a thing. And will take a closer look at the bulkhead...
