So I have now owned my Landrover 90 for 12 months now and since owning it I have made a few alterations / modifications from the standard vehicle it was when I started.

When I first purchased her the chassis had been coated quite badly in under seal, in places straight over mud. So I decided that I would strip all the chassis back to bare metal and recoat using rust killer and then recoating with Hammerite and Stone chip, before filling it with rust proofing.

This started out quite easy in my mind but thought I would wait until spring and the warmer weather. It also gave me chance to refurbish a set of discovery axels prior to fitting them when doing the chassis clean up.

Both axels have been fully stripped and rebuilt with all new seals, bearings and new stub axels on the rear, and new swivels, CV joints, seals, bearings etc on the front. All the suspension and been replaced with standard height shocks and springs and all new poly bushes.

The chassis strip down was started in March and I only found 2 holes in the rear, both under the upper shock absorber mounts. These were soon welded up and repaired. I have also had to replace the N/S jacking tube and a few small patches on the front outriggers. All I can say is that it is a good job I have a welder and know how to use it. I also know that the chassis will be good for a fair few years before I need to do anything else to it.

The replacement rear axel was fitted so I now have disc brakes on the rear along with all new brake pipes from the front and all-new hoses and pipes on the rear. I also replaced the discs and pads and refurbished the calipers with new pistons and seals.

As I was stripping the chassis I thought it would be a good idea to remove the seat box and check that for corrosion etc. as I know this is a usual place for rot to hide its self. It was no surprise that there was a small hole I could get my fist through in the corner of the battery box. I sourced a replacement from YRM fitted that and all was good.

This had me thinking that while the seat box was out I should drop the gearbox out and check the clutch, only a couple of bolts and nuts and all was good. Yes new clutch, cover plate and release bearing fitted along with both master and slave cylinders for good measure. I also replaced the rear crank seal as it was leaking and still does even with a new one.

Seat box back in along with some new more comfortable seats, I went down the Mazda RX8 Leather electric heated route; and what an amazing difference it makes to the ride. New carpets and mats along with new door seals, a cubby box in the middle a new stereo and Mud Stuff dash helped upgrade the interior. I have also fitted a boost gauge, volt gauge, rev counter and oil pressure gauge; you can never have too many gauges.

It as in June that I experienced a noise coming from the engine which turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket blowing after some of the studs had decided to escape. Nice easy job to change this I thought, I also took advantage to clean out the intercooler hoses and pipes, this was when I checked the turbo, it looked like someone had thrown gravel through it, I replaced all the internals so all sorted there.

The new front axel was fitted in September just after it’s MOT (Which it passed with no advisories); along with new discs and pads, refurbished calipers including pistons and seals and all new brake pipes and hoses; I also fitted a new brake master cylinder so all the braking is new. I also fitted a later type clutch pedal to make it a little easier to change gear.

I finally got to the front of the 90 and the front bumper had seen better days, more holes than a piece of Swiss Cheese a new winch bumper and winch have now sorted this along with a pair of Cibie spot lights, talking of lighting, the headlights have been upgraded to non sealed beam type with Osram Night Breaker Bulbs so I can now see where I an going. I have also fitted a 4-lamp roof bar just to aid things.

I am now just waiting for my insurance to sort itself out and it will be my new daily driver. There have been a few other changes like a central locking and alarm, both doors have been de-locked (It is a Truck Cab so only has 2 doors), new starter motor and alternator. Cam belt, tensioner and water pump and radiator replaced along with a full flush of the cooling system. It has also had a roll hoop fitted in the rear tub, this is purely cosmetic and mainly somewhere for the spare wheel to fit. I have also fitted a new set of towbar electrics that actually work.

So where does this leave me? What do I do next, not that there is much left to do I hope? Well I am going to enjoy it, I do wish I had taken a lot more photo’s while doing the jobs that I have but it never started as a project like it has ended up being. I would like to thank everyone who has helped with words of wisdom on here, the amazing write ups that Buster has done:

Without these I would have asked far more silly questions.

Please excuse the tool box on the wing, and don't ask how much I have spent.

Thank you all very much.

Very nice job there chief, you must be very pleased. I'm going through the same process on a 90 Truck Cab too but think I'm probably another two years away from saying "it's done", that's if anybody actually says that on a rebuild...

Interested to know about your winch and winch bumper; can you tell me what make/models you went for please?

It is done for now, as you say they are never 100% done always something else to do. The winch bumper is a Venom one from Shire Fabrication and the with is just a cheap one from eBay, more of a get you out the mire than a challenge type.
