Hello to all,

This is my first post to this forum, and I need some advice please.

I have just bought a 110 which makes a loudish clunk when setting off. The clunk comes from the back end, and as far as I can tell there is a large amount of backlash on the diff. If I push the vehicle, rotating both of the back wheels, it takes a lot of movement before the diferential flange begins to turn. In contrast the front differential flange begins to turn almost immediately.

I am I right in thinking this a good indicator that the diff is knackered?

Also, I have been told that the Salisbury axle (which is fitted to mine, with disc brakes) is fitted to all 110's. Is this true?

I've seen a picture of a rear axle which is supposed to be off a 110, but it doesn't look the same as mine (removeable back plate). This was off a 2003 Defender 110.

All replies will be appreciated.

Hoping someone can shed some light on any or all of the above.

Best Regards,

Phil.

Apart from the very latest models all 110 have a Salisbury rear, there are two types, the early "one ten" having 11 inch drums (as per S3) and the later "Defender" having discs. I believe that all have the same ratio, the Salisbury is as near to indestructable as is possible, however it is very expensive to repair, the positive side is there are plenty kicking about second hand, just seen one on ebay. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thank you for that info.

I've been looking at an axle off a 2003 110. It doesn't look the same (no screw on backplate) as mine. Is there much difference?

Regards,

Phil.

Not that i know off, but it's good to check it out if they are interchangable, which i believe so.

I know what you mean, cos i've a 02 def90 and the axle seems like it's all 'sealed' up as compared to the older one which have some kinda backplate or cover.
