Tbh they both seem pricey for what they are. Thanks for the info everyone.
If you were not buying as a purist (or buying as a purist with limited finances) which of the following would you be more interested in, a 1987 CSW with a 19j at 140k miles for £10k or a 1987 CSW with an isuzu engine with a reported 77k miles for £8k?
An old farmer came in to my agri workshop with a VM 492 swapped 110, that was a nice motor very smooth for an old dizzle. At that money, neither.
If I wanted one, I might go for the 19j engined Ninety, but I wouldn't pay more than 5k.

Condition would be key.
And don’t get me wrong. I love Ninetys/Defenders. But £10k seems a lot of money for a 19j. A £2500 Disco is a way better vehicle using mostly the same components.
So don't buy one. Get a Disco, or a Fourtrak, or an LPG converted Grand Cherokee. That sounds good but where would I find one at 5k? everything I see across all search options are around the 8 to 10k mark and I am not best placed for multiple viewing trips.
I saw an article in LRO about a South African personal import Defender 90 with a six cylinder BMW petrol engine factory fitted. An old farmer came in to my agri workshop with a VM 492 swapped 110, that was a nice motor very smooth for an old dizzle.
The one with the isuzu engine has a galv bulkhead and a solid chassis. I have had photos and a video provided by the owner. All work was done by D&M in Inverness https://www.dandmlrspares.com/
Yep the BMW M57 swap is quite popular, very powerful unit for a fender!I saw an article in LRO about a South African personal import Defender 90 with a six cylinder BMW petrol engine factory fitted.
I should think that would be a pretty good drive.
Disagree completely.
We have 3 19j’s on the farm. The lowest mileage one is on 150,000 miles and the highest about 240,000 miles.
I know several people who have got 150-200k out of 19js, but usually with half a dozen head gasket changes along the way, and oil changes at about 5k, and sometimes a new head or two as well. You may disagree. but I would suggest yours are the exception rather than the rule.

a guy down my road has an old 19j that just keeps pottering along. He just drives it about the roads of Sussex every now and again and I don’t see him ragging it around or towing, dunno the mileage but will ask
But I LOVE my 200tdi, it’s a perfect engine for the (proper) defender imo
robust, fairly powerful, easy to work on and tows well and alright on fuel
I won’t be towing etc., and I do want a defender. I already have one which has a chassis which I am advised requires too much work but it has a 3.9L EFI V8. I was hoping to find a defender which I could put the V8 into eventually but preferably with a decent engine in that will do whilst I gather the finance to pay for the engine swap.So don't buy one. Get a Disco, or a Fourtrak, or an LPG converted Grand Cherokee.
Don't become another victim of the Defender myths.
It is your money, but I wouldn't dream of paying today's prices for one.I won’t be towing etc., and I do want a defender. Well he hasn't jumped at mine so he must have some sense!!It is your money, but I wouldn't dream of paying today's prices for one.
