That sounds good but where would I find one at 5k? everything I see across all search options are around the 8 to 10k mark and I am not best placed for multiple viewing trips.

Thanks for the info everyone.

If you were not buying as a purist (or buying as a purist with limited finances) which of the following would you be more interested in, a 1987 CSW with a 19j at 140k miles for £10k or a 1987 CSW with an isuzu engine with a reported 77k miles for £8k?
Tbh they both seem pricey for what they are.

Condition would be key.

And don’t get me wrong. I love Ninetys/Defenders. But £10k seems a lot of money for a 19j. A £2500 Disco is a way better vehicle using mostly the same components.

The one with the isuzu engine has a galv bulkhead and a solid chassis. I have had photos and a video provided by the owner. All work was done by D&M in Inverness https://www.dandmlrspares.com/

So don't buy one. Get a Disco, or a Fourtrak, or an LPG converted Grand Cherokee.

Don't become another victim of the Defender myths.

An old farmer came in to my agri workshop with a VM 492 swapped 110, that was a nice motor very smooth for an old dizzle.
I saw an article in LRO about a South African personal import Defender 90 with a six cylinder BMW petrol engine factory fitted.

I should think that would be a pretty good drive.

Yep the BMW M57 swap is quite popular, very powerful unit for a fender!

I'm sure it is a hoot!

Disagree completely.

We have 3 19j’s on the farm. The lowest mileage one is on 150,000 miles and the highest about 240,000 miles.

You may disagree. but I would suggest yours are the exception rather than the rule.

I know several people who have got 150-200k out of 19js, but usually with half a dozen head gasket changes along the way, and oil changes at about 5k, and sometimes a new head or two as well.

They are quite good as a personal farm runabout, which is mostly what I used mine for. When I started long distance towing with it, it began showing signs of distress, so I got a V8 Auto D2 for trailer towing.

Only paid 1200 quid for the Disco anorl! :)

You can have my 90 with a 200TDi in it for 10k :D

a guy down my road has an old 19j that just keeps pottering along. He just drives it about the roads of Sussex every now and again and I don’t see him ragging it around or towing, dunno the mileage but will ask

There are always going to be survivors they will of course be the ones owned by people with mechanical sympathy, most cars dont get a mech to touch them from one mot to the next, and then only if something has gone wrong.

But I LOVE my 200tdi, it’s a perfect engine for the (proper) defender imo

robust, fairly powerful, easy to work on and tows well and alright on fuel

And starts well in all weathers, self bleeds easily enough, plus the def 200 is now a pretty valuable engine.

19j as said isn't too bad, however maintenance heavy, my Grandad had a few as farm runabouts like Turboman..
They cope ok pottering around, but if you load them down and give them some right hoof, then that is where they start to decline..

A 200TDI is a great motor, far superior in terms of toughness, we still have one on a stand that used to belong in a Defender Grandad did 230k in it and only changed the oil 11 times :D
still sounds and runs good. :D

I won’t be towing etc., and I do want a defender. I already have one which has a chassis which I am advised requires too much work but it has a 3.9L EFI V8. I was hoping to find a defender which I could put the V8 into eventually but preferably with a decent engine in that will do whilst I gather the finance to pay for the engine swap.

It is your money, but I wouldn't dream of paying today's prices for one.
