Good Afternoon guys,
I went on a journey today in the 2003 Td4 Auto Freelander, first time I have been on the motorway with it,
got to about 67-70 mph and it started to shake, steering mainly but a little through the body,
I pulled into a petrol station and inflated the tyres, rears were just a little low, pulled of up the road and although it was 85% better it was still there..

Pulled off from the motorway and saw a flicker from the dash (Battery Warning Light) very briefly on then off again,
then a few more times, pulled up at my destination and found the the battery was not secure, so it was moving around in the tray, fixed it down and checked the connections and all seemed OK..

Did my visit and returned to the Freelander, key in ignition and on starting all lights extinguished except the Battery one, this stayed on all the way home, wipers getting progressively slower & slower, about 4 miles from home the 3 Amigos came on, followed by the SRS then the parking brake warning light about 2 miles from home, and finally just around the last couple of corners the F4 came on..

Not worried about the vibration as I think its wheel & Tyre related,
but the rest I am hoping is either battery or alternator related,
I am guessing the alternator but not entirely sure,,
anyone please point me in the right direction..
Neal..

Well just been out and surprisingly she started first time..

Checked the battery not running = 11.63v
Checked the battery running = 11.63v

Turned on lights = 11.13v
Turned on wipers = 10.89v
Turned on blower = 10.03v

Alternator!!!! I am sure it is..turned off..
tried to restart and nothing, lights on dash just dim..
tried as you do several more times turning the key and nothing at all..

Just called the AA now to get them to confirm my thoughts,,
and to check if I have missed anything obvious,,

Belts from what I can see are all there, but will wait and see what the
AA Find..

if it is the Alternator..
does it have to be the
(YLE000070) 150A
one or is the
(VAP841ALT-006) 120A enough..

Searching as we speak for the best price just in case its the Alternator..

Is the 150A the biggest??

You can get it refurbished I'm pretty sure mate, cheaper than a noo one :). Oh btw the dash lights come one one by one as the batt voltage drops, it's a sure sign that your alternator is goosed :).

Well the AA Man has been,
He said it looks like a fairly new alternator, so looked into it a little further,
when he squeezed what he called the "alternator signal wire" to remove it,
the battery started charging, if he let go it stopped,
so he removed the plug and cleaned it up and closed the gaps, but the outer is broken,
so when it is returned it does not clip in position,
I went off to put some charge back in it ready for the morning,
and within 2 miles the light was back on, so I will need to get a new plug and
change them over this one isn't making a good connection..

Any idea what the plugs real name is???
or any part numbers would be even better...;)

Can someone with a Td4 engine go and have a look at the cables connecting to the alternator and tell me if they go into the main wiring harness on the Td4 engine. There will be a thick cable and some smaller cables going into the plug that he's after. This is an eggsample from my v6. Now you know why I takes so many pic's.

Yup, just been to check the cables - a little 'un and a big 'un meet up and then go across to meet up with a cable from the starter, they then all continue on into somewhere I can't see properly at the moment.

Label near the plug on the alternator gives part number of the cable, and clearly states Alternator and Starter.

PM sent to the OP with details of label.

Betterer pic of a v6 alternator for those interested

My Searches so far have found that it is a L/DFM plug141,
found on several 150a Valeo Alternators..

On the following cars;
BMW 318D 2.0 E46 2001 ON
BMW 330D 2.9 E46 1999-03
BMW 330XD 2.9 E46 2000-03
LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2.0 TD4 2001 ON

Seem not to be able to get one on its own from the interweb, so will have to go trawl
the scrappies and breakers over the weekend..

Again if anyone knows of a Td4 2001+ being broken I would love to know..

Cheers..

Tried that mate, and cant find any..on there..

I may pop in though to there parts guy and see..

Thanks,,

Update;;;

Contacted a few members that are breaking Td4's with no luck,

Contacted a few breakers on e-bay, and 2 replied,
one said it was part of the loom and it was mine for £125 +P&P

The other was fantastic, phoned me up and talked through my
requirements, sent him pictures of the plug from this thread,
and he confirmed it to be the very same plug, he cut the plug off
the broken Td4 with about 6" of wire's on it and sent it to me for
the fantastic price of £7.50 including P&P,
Arrived today and I am pleased to say it is the identical plug but
not broken..

New plug

So on Saturday I will be removing the old plug and putting the new one in,
then keeping everything crossed that this fixes the issue,
I will however need to jump start the Freelander once fitted,
is there anything I need to know or watch out for or is it just as any other jump start procedure???

Thanks..
