Windscreen was bottle top - anyone have a spare?

Hello I was topping up the windscreen wash the other day and the cap of the bottle dropped deep down into the engine bay. Today I took the bottom tray off (always forget how long that takes!) thinking it would be there but no - it must have fallen out somewhere over the past couple of days of...

Yet Another VCU Question- it's on my bench.

I know of no way to test these on the bench. Your best bet is to put it all back together and do the One Wheel Up test (do a search on here). There is also a lot of stuff about reversing on full lock and seeing how easy it/difficult it is but that is more by feel than science ....

    FL 1s...common as muck ?

Definitely not common in the derogative sense. The French seem to love and respect them and there are plenty around - nearly all L series or TD4 (they were saved from the curses of the petrol K engine because diesel is so much cheaper here so there was no real market). It can be hard to get...

    possible rear diff bushes

Most likely the front mount of the diff. Qutie straightforward to replace and cheap.

    Needed ird pinion

Sounds like the IRD has been tampered with because it is broken .... why else would they take out the pinion and remove the propshaft? And if the IRD needs replacing, you should replace the VCU too, because that may have been the reason for the IRD failing. Not uncommon to hide problems thsi...

rumble on slow acceleration and deceleration

Worse on cornering eg going round a roundabout? Just a rumbling noise or is it a vibration through the car?

Noise from Timing/Aux belt end of L Series engine

Glad it is proving itself in a testing environment! Looks like the gearbox is getting a lot of work - you can pace yourself and the engine with a manual box. I had a big old 3 litre vauxhall senator about 10 years ago with an auto sports box which was lovely but it didn't half get hot on steep...

    Brass neck, Freelander image theft

Glad this is resolved. In fact any picture has an owner and it is not legally a free for all on the internet. However, galleries like Google Picasa say in their small print that any gallery pictures posted can be used by them for publicity pruposes (it is the terms and conditions box that...

What was the cause of your 3,2,1 Amigos

This is a good idea for a thread - we will all dip into almost without fail! My 3 amigos initial fault was no amigos at all. I sorted that by just replacing the bulbs - which were black and burned probably because they had been on all the time for many months (or even years). Needless to say...

Noise from Timing/Aux belt end of L Series engine

Nice one! Your Hippo is just like mine . same colour I think, too? The noises you hear are the one's I hear. We just need to chill a bt and enjoy our holidays and then when we are home we can big up our cars and say they are the best things on the planet (until the next noise) Glad it went...

Stunning picture! I have never been to NZ but I know from my photographic colleagues how beautiful it is. Breathe it all in!

Noise from Timing/Aux belt end of L Series engine

Great stuff! And how are the engine noises? In the summer I was worried about a long drive to Bergamo Italy from our place near Toulouse (10 hours) but after the first couple of hours you just get on with it and trust the car you are driving ..... Have fun!

regular thumping rear transmission when cornering.

Rear diff, front mounting. If you grab the prop near the diff and move it around side to side up and down and see lots of play at the front of the diff, that's the problem. Of course there should be some give (cos thats the idea of a rubber mounting). You can put a big lever in there to check.

regular thumping rear transmission when cornering.

It sounds like the front diff mount - had a simlilar problem on mine and that cured it. Easy fix and you will find a 'how to' on here somewhere. They are great vehicles and I love mine but have had to get my hands dirty and learn to be a mechanic ....

    Vcu propshaft separation woes

Noise from Timing/Aux belt end of L Series engine

I hear many vehicle noises my family fails to hear ..... As you say, the test will be whether it gets you to the ball and back. Fix an old rattling roofrack to the roof and put some clanking bottles in the boot. Keep the family talking or turn the music up. Distract your ears and enjoy...
