Aren't most solid pieces that look hinge like? other wise i think its just a case of swapping the solid ones for hinged ones and possibly having an issue with the wipers but cant think of the layout.

Slightly dodgy method to this one but it usually works quite well for diagnosis. Get a length of wire and strip a few inches off each end then in this instance you could wrap/twist one end round the flash terminal at the stalk end and then wrap/twist the other end to the corresponding relay...

Guess we've figured its not the stalk then, if no one else has any guesses on what's wrong for a while I'll have a look on mine when I get home and had a few more guesses.

Is it definitely a rotating squeal? Or is it a metallic squeal or something like that?

Swap the flash/full wires round, if this swaps the problem round then it's the stalk.
