about 18 months ago i had this done. it cost me around £1500 incl labour and vat. i stress that it wasnt done at a lr main dealer as you will be talking closer to £4k for the same work.
i thought the unofficial 'fix' was to somehow detach the rf, which meant no more interference from external sources, but also meant that the operating distance of your keyfob was greatly reduced?
butler? i dont let him near my rangey, thats a job for the chauffeur! :)
yes a tennis ball works well, try not to use one just used by a slobbering border collie :s
i think there a few threads in here with pointers for this, you will just have to use the search.
if i recall its down to something like other wireless devices in your area keeping the becm alive.
lol i ran my p38 rangie from yorkshire to lands end and back on 4 out of 6 cyl (bmw 2.5 diesel) last year. I didnt know at the time until after i was back home :)
are they P38 18" wheels or 18" wheels from a L322? if they are from the newer rangey (like my 18" twinspokes from a 2003 vogue) you need the spacing spiggots fitted to each wheel. They look alot like Hurricanes but they aren't, and have 22mm nuts instead of the P38's 27mm nuts.

although its only a one man band and doesnt open up bright and early, but a very good service all the same, knows his landys and has all the test/diag equipment for the whole LR range.
don mine did eactly the same. i bought some 2003 18" rims, and bought some 22mm wheel nuts & spiggots that claimed to be black adonised. you didnt per chance buy them from a guy called "covertwiseguy" off ebay did you?
looks like i'll need to get the hammerite out :s
in fact, here it is, make sure you read it all, as i have updated the links i put on for the document written by tigapiglet:
