I have fitted a new water pump as well because i think thats what caused it to overheat in the first place and start making this noise

I just rebuilt the engine, and the timing was perfect when I set it and it starts instantly no bother I checked the valve clearances three times I also had a spare vaccum pump lying around so I swapped them and made no difference And to get it so clean I used engine gunk and elbow grease :)

I had this problem and put a genuine filter on and the oil light stopped flashing

I use RTV selant between the gearbox and flywheel housing. I was told to do this as it helps stop water leaking into the flywheel when wading, i also put some round the starter motor.:D

So far my rebuild has cost around £350 not including my engine stand, which is a must. I built my engine from two knackered ones. When i was looking, a good 200tdi on ebay, you can pay anything from £500 upwards and then are you buying another mans problems? I would rebuild.

Sorted now, the cam shaft had moved right back and someone didn't notice, Cheers :D:D:D

I will venture back to the garage again tomorrow night and have another look, it must pretty obvious what I am doing wrong just can't see it yet. Cheers Graeme

Yes the skew gear spins freely same when he pump is fitted. There is slight movement in the cam, front to back, although the cam still catches.

When I fit the skew gear into the block, the cam turns so far round and then locks and will not turn any further, when I take the skew gear out, the cam freely turns through 360deg. I cannot work out what I am doing wrong. Cheers

I have tried two different skew gears in, both jam, I have also look at the housing to see if there is a shape for the cam to pass

Yes it's catching on the bottom of the skew gear housing, where the bearings are

I am currently carrying out a full rebuild on my 200tdi, I took the vacuum pump out without marking it. Now after reading manual, this has to be marked prior to removal, so the cam and skew gear realign when fitting. The cam turns 350 degreas then catches on the bottom of the vaccum pump and...
