I don’t know why it would be different on a LHD to be honest, but I don’t doubt what you say. I have removed my steering box quite a few times for various reasons. I have fully drained the fluid and refilled and never had an issue with airlocks etc. Cars can be fickle things eh !!

I would also try and find the correct spec oil for your PAS system.

There is no real need to bleed the PAS system on a D2. You just fill it up and turn the wheel full lock both ways a few times. I would bin your cheap pump and start again with a new decent one. Metal in the fluid is not good, and I would hazard a guess it’s t from the pump running with no oil. I...

Good to hear. Welding in these areas is not a job to take lightly if I’m honest. Having the skills and equipment to tackle this isn’t something most diy mechanics have. Whatever the cause, and I hope it becomes an obvious and easy fix, good luck with it 👍

You could run a tap through the hole and then give them a blast with brake cleaner or similar. Spring washers wouldn’t go amiss if you wanted to use them though.

If you put your hand down into that corner, you will feel the soft vinyl covered foam sound deadening. It’s about an inch thick. Pull that away from the bulkhead and you will see the loom going through a horizontal oval hole. It’s in my photo with the white repair panel already welded in, but...

Where we’re talking about is below that. That’s the scuttle panel. Go to the passenger side in the engine bay and you will see the aluminium valve block for the ABS system. Down in the corner beneath that where the inner wing wheel arch meets the bulkhead, you will see where the loom goes...

It sounds as if you’re lucky and it’s not as bad as mine was then. When you look up behind the dash, you can see the oval hole where the main loom comes through. That’s were my leak originated.

This is what I found and how I dealt with it.

I second the inner wing to bulkhead area as a culprit. Pull back the foam sound deadening and have a look where the loom goes through the bulkhead on both sides. The deadening traps crap and moisture in the corners and encourages rot.
