Just a follow up question - drying it out was not a solution as you suggested. Crackle is back but there are lots of connectors in that compartment - are there any guides or youtube that would help me navigate. I am not even sure which module is the amp. Thanks John

crackling has stopped!! for now. thanks for the advice. I may have to follow up and clean connectors but for now all ok and wife happy music is back in RR.

There is no satnav fitted it is a HSE model. but I have checked and it certainly feels damp. I will use a hairdryer to gently dry up and see if it stops - thanks John

Thanks for feedback. `BCM/BCU unit was mentioned as a potential source of the problem. I tried battery reset plus work around for Bluetooth model again today but no luck. BCM/BCU replacement may be a technical bridge too far for me.
