Series 3 engine ...repair or replace??

For some reason nobody sets the pump timing using the timing marks, it is after all why there there , when a later cav pump is set up in the shop the timing is also set , if you remove the small window on the side of the pump you will see that at TDC a timing mark lines up with the edge of a...

Noisy speedo head - do they need lube?

Yes the spedo can be noisy, take it out of the dash, be carefull with the two round nuts, remove the glass, and the workings, lubricate the shaft and gears with a light oil, dont get oil on the disk or magnet. Its simple if you take your time.

    carb swap

Hi all, My carb on my s1 has always been a pain in the a*s, . It has always had a flat spot of varying degrees, I sent it off and had it overhauled and it was little better. It seems that the accelerator pump is just not working as it should, the other strange thing is that if I leave it for a...

I'm planning on making a mechanical replacement for the VCU!

Had all of these discussions a few years back when i had a td4, Im thinking of getting another, so i will inject my two Penneys worth. In 1948 Landrover had the same problem of transmission wined up, they solved it by putting a free wheel in the drive train, the same would work for the...

i did this once in a series 1, engine bolted right up to the bell housing, made new mounts, and moved the rad forward. if i remember, i had to weld a pipe through the front crossmember, to fit the bottom hose. It pulled like a train.

    HELP LPG and Autoelectrician

Had a lot of taxis running on gas in the 70s, we found that if you advance the ignition a fair bit when on gas you will improve the mpg. Back in the day we would rig up a choke cable to turn the distributor to alter timing from the cab. also, remember that gas is unleaded, so if not converted...

light knocking from engine when under load

almost certainly piston noise, a big end will knock under light load, main bearings will rumble under hi load, a piston will sound like a cam shaft "clack" on hi load, try disconnecting one ht lead at a time and see if it goes away

has anyone changed valve oil seals before? tips needed

if anyone is daft enough to still have the butterfly in the inlet manifold, then they deserve to smoke. A diesel needs air, the more the better,

has anyone changed valve oil seals before? tips needed

valve stem seals in a diesel will make little difference to the smoke, there is no vacuum in the inlet manifold so the oil is not suked in , back in the day no diesel had seals fitted at all.

    Britpart canvas hoods? Any good?

bought one about 2 years ago, it is now completely rotten, took it to an upholster and he said it was cheap and nasty cotton, and the sun had ruined it. Had i known it was britpart i would not have bought it. I did not expect this from Paddocks.
