    Turner Top Hat Short Engine

The Rangie P38 we bought last year with a cooked engine is going to have a Turner Top Hat short motor, we have done 4500 miles since last July but it has very bad oil consumption. Turners have been excellent to deal with, the engine arrived in a snowstorm but was really well packaged and...

    Disco 2 D2 V8 Core Plugs

Philip's D2 ES has a couple of block core plugs leaking through their rims. New ones procured, but we are having great trouble getting the old ones out. Work is continuing, but would like to hear of any tip/tricks for removal. Peter

    P38A 2000 4.6 Vogue - Manifold Heat Shields?

I had to destroy mine when we did the heads as the bolts were rusted solid, so do I need to replace them, or is the car safe without them? Alternative is exhaust wrapping the manifolds. Thoughts please. Peter PS: We've done 170 miles, new oil and filter, new battery negative cable.

P38A What Happens When You Don't Use OAT Coolant

Pictures of one of Philip's water pipes from his 4.0 V8 Thor engine. The damage was done before he bought it and he does run the correct coolant, but imagine what is happening inside the cooling system! Peter

P38A Range Rover Wanted: Towbar parts

We have fallen into P38 ownership by accident, but it has a certain 'something' about it! The car we have has the cross-beam under the back, but nothing else. I assume I need more mounting parts plus a tow ball. Needs to be 3500kg rated. Anything out there? Peter

    Discovery 2 Full Chassis

Bought a while back to future-proof our 1999 Disco 2. It has been cleaned, shot blasted, Zinc sprayed and then powder coated in semi-gloss black. Though our Disco could use it now, the job of fitting a quarter chassis is much more attractive, and of course, these chassis sections weren't...

    P38A W-Reg Vogue

I've just bought an W-Reg P38 Vogue with 'head gasket' problems, nice condition, lots of new stuff on the chassis and a year's MOT. Engine isn't too much of a problem, we have a pair of Thor heads already skimmed on the shelf and a good quality Victor Reintz gasket set, we run a couple of V8...

    Rushden Cavalcade this weekend

If you are in the area, the Cavalcade is this weekend and worth a visit. We are there with our two Ruston Hornsby engines and the 6-wheel trailer. Located just south of Rushden on the A6, entrance in Avenue Road, NN10 0SN, parking is free, admission varies. The parking field is a short walk...

    Disco 2 ES MOT Repairs

Philip's D2 ES failed its MOT recently, the footwell was rather more 'ventilated' than the MOT guy liked, the windscreen had a mark over on the passenger side, but was within the wiper's swept area, and there was a hole in the chassis at the back. The footwell was a fairly large area with...

    New Trailer Build

As mentioned elsewhere, we are starting another 'Toy Hauler' trailer, to carry one of our show engines and for us or our son to live in while away exhibiting. This is particularly important when we go to European events as hotels can be pretty expensive! Our bigger engines are both Ruston &...

    Aeration and Water Passage Scoring

On Philip's engine, the material of the heater pipes has been eaten way by hot, aerated water flow, leaving the pipes so much scrap. Not sure if the water pump seal has failed, but the pump will be changed (4th one) before we run the engine. I've seen this before on truck engines, but never as...

    V8 Thor Gasket Issue

Philip's D2 V8 has just started with head gasket failure, so he has immediately taken it off the road and stripped it down. The failure for the second time is at the extreme ends of the heads where the fire ring and gasket have failed. In both cases, the head bolts did not seem to us to be as...

Torque Value - A Frame Ball Joint to Axle Casing

Just putting a new top ball joint in, but struggling to find a torque value for the four M12 bolts that hold the ball joint bracket to the axle. Can anyone help, please? Got the RAVE manual at home on my PC but not here at work. Thanks, Peter

    Bought Another D2 V8

As you do.... 64K miles, has done 200 miles in 5 years, ECU and BCU lost contact with each other, sunroofs leak, manual box, aircon, no ACE :) coils, cloth trim, 5 seater (I think, didn't look in the back) Just over a grand, summer project. Peter

    Plasma Cutters

Got to cut out a big subframe under the floor of the Mercedes bus that we are converting, and angle grinders won't get into most of the areas we have to cut through, so a plasma cutter is on the cards. There are three layers of steelwork, at least two have to come out, probably all three as...

Disco 2 Heater Fan Bearing Lube

Our son complained about his heater fan sqealing when hot, so I got him to pull it out this morning so we could look at it. The fan is pushed onto the shaft with a small latch and a clip to hold it in place. Take the clip off and while applying firm pressure from between the fan and the fixing...

Parking the 6-Wheel Drawbar Trailer With A Front Towbar

Just a general interest item, showing us putting the trailer away after a show last year. The trailer is fully loaded, Philip points to the rear tyres, which as we pull round at the bottom of the close are being seriously twisted by the action of the turning. The dashcam is a mini0801, HD...

Bit Of An Odd Thing To Find

Just taking the front seats and carpet out of my D2 manual, and under the passenger seat attached to the audio amplifier bracket is a transmission controller ECU for the ZF auto box. It's all plugged in but I've got an R380 5-speed manual box and the build sheet for my car shows 'V8 Manual...
