    Hippo refresh

Well, just because you have no money doesn't mean you can't have even less sense......:p:D I have to admit I expected much worse under the wheel arches, I thought it actually looked pretty good considering. But then I used to own a mazda..... :(

Freelander 1 So I looked at a freelander....

Well, I just told the lady I didn't want it. Now you are starting to change my mind! On the VCU, I reckon it would just about idle in a circle on the flat but it would be marginal. There was no skipping or scuffing and the tyres wear looked normal, although excessive wear on the...

Freelander 1 So I looked at a freelander....

Yes, little niggles I can live with. To be fair, stuff like the windows are not a difficult fix but also not urgent. So I might live with them for a while. Stiff VCU and odd noises at the back do worry me a bit more. I am still half tempted though, if i can get it cheap enough. I just have this...

Freelander 1 So I looked at a freelander....

Can you ask her if she will take £500 for it? Actually, I will raise that to what she has spent: How does £800 sound? ;) Seriously though, that does not help me much, other than to make me jealous! Also, to be fair, the owner of this car said it had been 100% reliable and not needed any work on...

Freelander 1 So I looked at a freelander....

Well, that was more positive than I expected! Good to know I am not mad then. :D You are right about prices though, they are all over the place at the moment. One of the reasons why am tempted to just get this one and deal with the consequences.....

Freelander 1 So I looked at a freelander....

......and now I am wondering whether I should consider buying it, or run away. So I would welcome any input either way. The positives: - 2005, 80,000 ish miles. - Bodywork generally good for the age - interior good. Cloth (which I prefer) but no obvious damage. - No signs of abuse or rust...

    Three Amigos Help

Ah, I did say I knew nothing about the FL1 abs system, didn't I? :( I just managed to get RAVE working (it was not playing nicely with windows 10) and now know that post 2002 FL1s appear to have active sensors with the magnetic elements in the seals of the wheel bearings. I know nothing of that...

    Three Amigos Help

I know nothing about FL1 abs sensors but have fixed a few on other cars. So, in case it helps........ If you still have a sensor fault after swapping sensors I would check two things: 1) Assuming it is a two wire sensor. Check the voltage (ignition on) to ground on the two wires and compare to a...

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

Yes, but that is the problem right there..... The more I look at it the more I fancy building a weekend top, with lifted suspension and big typres :D  The problem being that it will then not really be a family car, so I need something else to replace my bmw. Why is this a problem? Well...

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

I think I am favouring the TD4 over the 1.8. While I am capable of doing a head gasket etc, I am not convinced I want the hassle, ditto manifold changes etc. On the other hand if a nice example came up then I guess I would not turn it down. That is still an option ;)

that thought did cross my mind!:D

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

Hmm.. well, I have discovered there is a pretty decent offroad course near me so maybe I really do need to look at autos. btw. Ignoring the negative comments I made about 3 doors, is there any difference in the internal space/boot between the 3 and 5 doors? Also does the 3 door (removable...

    Another hello....

Upgrades? Well I might just have been checking out what tyres would be good and how much hassle to fit a lift kit ;) To be fair I mentioned to my wife that something capable offroad would allow me to use a local offroad course and her reaction was pretty positive :D

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

thanks. So it sounds like the TD4 is still the best option for me but a 1.8 would not be out of the question. I'll definitely be checking propshafts ;) I think I will have to drive a auto to see if it would suit me.

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

I've always hated 3 door cars. Bigger doors mean they will not open properly in a car park, so difficult to get in. Even worse getting into the back. Oh, and I don't like the sun. Bah humbug! Looks like a 5 door for me then :D

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

That sounds promising for the freelander 1 comfort wise. As I am still learning, the L-series? That is the diesel before the bmw engined TD4? Am I correct? Thanks, I suspect the days of usable cars for a few hundred pounds are well gone though :( Out of interest, is the head gasket a...

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

oh, and picking up on this.... Is this for the FL1? Is the egr/map something specific to the freelander or just the usual old diesel getting clogged up type of thing? Actually, on this subject, a couple of common issues on the M47 320d (which I had on mine) are the glow plug control module...

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

Getting back to the freelander, is there much difference in refinement between the FL1 and FL2? Somehow I like the idea of the FL1 more on the assumption that it is smaller and less complex (so less to go wrong?). Or is that likely to be offset by the age of any FL1 vs the more modern FL2?

Am I being daft getting a freelander?

Sounds like I need to read up on auto box issues ;) I think that is my challange - finding a car that is still well looked after and in decent condition. Keeping it that way is not a problem if I like the car. As you say, it will be a very different vehicle to my 320d and until recently I would...
