If you know your way around a spanner and have a hefty set of circlip pliers, then the core exchange route is economical. But you must prelude the turbo before starting and ensure the oil in and out are vertical. My core was £130. 300tdi, but I doubt there's much difference in price.

I still wouldn't rule out turbo oil seal damaged. 1-2mm lateral movement seems a lot to me. I just got a complete turbo core and replaced my old one. About £130.

An update to this thread. I’ve encountered the exact same issue with new parts not having the machined landing surface for the bronze sleeve on the shaft. My solution has been to give it to friendly machinists - who for £80 will machine the surface in two of said swivel balls. If you’re in the...

There is the newly reconditioned (by me) engine installed. I have plenty of photos on the laptop of the exchange. This is a new phone so just popped out to garage to take that photo.
