This is part number JGC 000081. Now discontinued but available on eBay. I got mine from Germany for 20 Euros. Easy to replace just unclip and remove the wire plug, 10 minutes at most, hope this helps.

I've arranged for an engineer to come round and inspect the car and take it for a test drive, the report he supplies will stand up in court (unlike the RAC report) so we'll see how it pans out. I'm keeping a diary of the whole event, phone calls, emails and photos. Thanks for the links.
