    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Item description for the rad said in big bold letters, it has a baffle. I didn't check before I put it on but I've checked the old one and it does (and the fault existed with the old radiator in place). I'm going to have to start eliminating items. One thing I thought about was 'locking' the...

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Just to make sure it isn't something as stupid as the rad pipe being connected to the wrong line on the expansion tank, is it supposed to connect to the left or right side on the below pic?

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Well, it did say disco 2 on the box. That's a good point, I will check. In a wine endured moment of inspiration, I have had a thought.... The line from the top of the rad to the expansion bottle goes to a pipe that seems to be situated below the coolant line in the expansion tank (when...

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Thanks Grrrrr, I don't think it actually changes in terms of it shredding a newspaper or noise. You can hear it, but it isn't what I would call really loud (which is obviously subjective). I'll do the newspaper test again tomorrow and see if I can stop it at any point in the warm up process...

Would it still shred a rolled up newspaper if it wasn't locking? Are there different degrees of lock?

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Well, it's a completely new unit. It is also shredding a newspaper when I put it in (as did the previous unit). I don't feel that it changes speed though as it sounds the same all of the time. I might make a vid to seeing anybody thinks it should be louder/more powerful.

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Ok, so I removed the condenser and, guess what... Still the same. It is a bit better in that it only needs a small increase in engine revs to bring the temperature back down, but I haven't put the slam panel or grill back on yet so I would imagine that it has made no difference at all. So...

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Got Ya. I will just 'inspect' the fastenings. I'm pretty sure it is empty anyway.

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

So I'm going to remove the condenser today. Looking at it there are just 4 bolts and the 2 hoses (in addition to the slam panel and grill. RAVE says that I must discharge the coolant and then gives a very long detailed explanation of, essentially, having to take it to a specialist coolant...

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Hi Dan, in honesty I haven't done anything with it yet. I've been busy on (and recovering from) my stag do. I've earmarked this weekend to remove the condenser and give it another try though. Don't worry, I will update as soon as I give it another try. Once fixed I'm determined to do a...

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Thanks guys, it's definitely not a sensor issue and is definitely getting hot. I'm going to drain the system again, check the thermostat and remove the aircon condenser. If that makes a difference then I know it's air flow.

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Hi Grrrr, yes, the photo was taken in the process of topping the antifreeze up; I was 'burping' it at the time and it dropped back down. I'll have another test of the fan when it is up to temperature. The antifreeze is a winter one and is a concentrate that I have mixed with water. It was...

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Yes, that helps. I thought I could probably get it out but it's nice to have it confirmed! I'm becoming more and more convinced it is airflow now and if it isn't the viscous fan (as that has been changed and the symptoms remain the same) it must be to do with something further forward!

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

I don't think it's the aircon itself at the moment, but it may be the condenser blocking the airflow so have decided to remove that and see if it helps... Fingers crossed!

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

My fan seems to be running pretty hard, even from cold. It certainly mashes a rolled up newspaper when cold and no revs. I'll try it a few times whilst coming up to temperature to see if it disengages and again when up to temp. Really can't see. How it can be the fan though; its brand new!

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Going to try removing it. RAVE says to remove the intercooler and battery box to get it out but I'm going to try and do it from the front...

Haven't seen them before so I'm presuming I haven't got them! Just bought them and now need to work out where they actually fit!

Plastic wings? Come again what are they and where should they be!?!

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

Yep, next job is to remove the aircon rad I think. The aircon has never worked and is not something I'm bothered about. Is there any need for me to have the aircon rad there or can I get away without it? I'm just thinking if it will help airflow, I will just dispense of it for now! I'm...

    P38A Another P38 Overheating Problem

I think the aircon was a red herring. I realised I have been driving about with the front grill, slam panel and upper cowling off which has probably helped airflow. I put the slam panel and upper cowling back on and even with the aircon off, it overheats in the same manner (although only needs...
