Freelander 1 Is there a buyers guide?

    A TD4 Freelander.

Freelander 1 Is there a buyers guide?

Despite fixing the dreaded Golf one more time (and so putting off buying a replacement), this may now be happening and I've found what appears to be a good 'in locally. Just out of interest what sort of MPG should I expect - say on a dual carriageway at a constant(ish) 70mph?

Disco 2 How much free play is normal in the turbo?

No real need. 1) the breather hose runs into the intake system before the intercooler, so any excess oil ends up at the lowest point 2) they're known for it 3) I don't care if the hateful thing dies.

Disco 2 How much free play is normal in the turbo?

I'll have the intercooler pipe off for a look then, thank you. As an aside, my wife's doggy old VW Gold TDi was leaking oil out of it's intercooler bottom hose recently, so I may get my 'rebuilding a turbo' wish granted anyway. The 'dub is a lot more difficult to work on though - everything...

Disco 2 How much free play is normal in the turbo?

Oh well, you've spoiled all of my fun. I've never taken a turbo apart before. I may have to get a secondhand one and do it anyway, just so I've got one 'on the shelf' in case I need it. On a slightly more serious note - thank you. You've probably saved me many hours of skinned knuckles...

    Disco 2 clutch

I've got a 2000 TD5 disco. And the clutch fork went. Mine went with a 'bang' and the pedal went pretty stiff. I gave it a kick (as I was mid gear change at the time) and it moved about a cm and went solid. I was just around the corner, so I switched off, got it into gear, moved into low...

Disco 2 How much free play is normal in the turbo?

I was poking around the Land Rover the other day and took the inlet air hose off the turbo to take a quick look. There's a little bit (couple of mm at most) of movement in the end shaft on the inlet side of the turbo. I'm thinking its toast and needs a rebuild before it eats itself - the...

    Auto v. Manual

As I said, my memory is hazy on the issue - I ave a D2. What's the recommended interval for a change get of fluid then? And what's the going rate?

    Auto v. Manual

I'm no expert, but what I've heard is that the auto box is generally reliable if it receives an oil change (every 100k or so IIRC). And the manual is expensive if you need the clutch / DMF doing. Personally I think that engine suits the auto box well.

Disco 2 Which DMF / clutch

I have a nasty suspicion that I'll be separating the transmission this year as I have a very grumbly release bearing. Whilst I'm in there I guess I may as well replace the DMF and clutch. Given my recent grumblings about the use of the term OEM* and given that there are a thousand and one...

    Disco 2 Misfire TD5

No dramas with that at all. But to say 'don't use OEM only use a LR boxed item' is clearly a bit silly, because anything in a LandRover box which wasn't made by LandRover is OEM by definition... I'm just being nit picky really, but it would have been more correct to say 'only buy a LandRover...

    Disco 2 Misfire TD5

Not trying to get into an argument, but do you know what 'OEM' means? An awful lot of stuff that comes in a LandRover box is OEM - or do you think that LandRover make every single component themselves?

Disco 2 I've noticed that there are loads of 'advice needed, help me fix x, y or z' theads

Massively helpful when required of course, but mildly depressing and worrying when thinking about what might break next! So as a counterpoint I'd just like to say that my cosmetically 'challenged', old, leggy, tired Disco TD5 has been absolutely epic recently. She took us nearly 1,000 miles...

    EGR valve - MOT failiure

I kept the ones I'd removed. And then in the autumn (just before I found out about the new MoT rules) I had a garage tidy up and threw it out.:(

    Disco 2 Dead Disco!!

Well, whilst I agree generally, I've owned my D2 for 3 years and 40k miles. I've not yet succumbed to the need to plug it in. I expect that I have just given it the kiss of death and I'll need a diagnostic when I try to start it later!

    Disco 2 Dead Disco!!

Re the EKA, I wandered into my local dealership with the V5 and they gave me the EKA code. Dunno if they're supposed to or if that's normal, but might be worth trying.

    Which model Disco?

Oh and d) the money I save on depreciation and main dealer labour charges means that I can afford to buy the new tools I need for the job in hand (man maths in full effect!). Yeah,a bit of rot has made an appearance. The cills needed welding for the last MoT, and if I'm honest the boot floor...

    Which model Disco?

She'll go on for a few years yet I reckon. She's had a new rear chassis, new SLS bags various bits of corrosion dealt with and a few other things over the past 12 months. In the next 12 I'll be sorting the glow plugs (she doesn't like starting in this weather), replacing a window regulator...

    Which model Disco?

I've got a leggy (191k now) D2 TD5. If I drive it at 60 mph ish I get a little over 30mpg. Up that to 70mph and it goes down to high 20's - say 27 / 28 or so. On a recent trip back from the French alps, fully loaded, skis on the roof and the cruise set to a GPS indicated 130kph (81mph as...
