Cover for pulleys and belts - worth the bother in your opinion?

Hello all, I'm thinking about a project for the few days off work over Christmas: I've noticed when wading through any more than a couple of inches of water the ignition light comes on for a few seconds. Obviously water splashes onto the pulleys making the belt slip a little. I'm thinking...

Poor quality genuine parts - Lucas Iighting Switch

Just arrived in the post - I'm sure this can't be right - open contacts? It will make it easy to keep the contacts clean, but I can't help thinking there should be a back on the switch. The soldering is poor too, and will need to be redone.

    Holy rattling bonnets Batman

My bonnet rattles (it's a TDi LoL). Not that much of a problem, but very little else rattles after years of chasing them down. A new plastic hinge insert on the drivers side stops the rattle for a few weeks, but then seems to wear just enough to allow the bonnet to rattle again at that hinge...

    Opinions on electric paint sprayers?

With the first whiff of Spring in the air my mind is turning to all those jobs I've been putting off for years - one of which is a respray. I should point out that the original 34 year old paint is so oxidised that it almost has a matt finish, and comes off as a fine dust when you wipe a finger...

    Raptor Engineering?

Has anyone been in touch with raptor Engineering recently? The website seems to be down. I need a replacement for my dash binnacle, which is disintegrating . Whatever sort of plastic they are made from even seems to be resistant to epoxy repairs.

One for the anaoraks - swivel pin thrust washers

This might be useful to someone, thought it was worth passing on. I noticed a tiny bit of top/bottom play in my steering when prepping for the MoT recently. Not enough to need replacing all the hub steering components, which are only a few years old. I thought I would replace the thrust...

Top tip when replacing head gasket

As you probably know, the head bolts are torqued to 40NM, the 60 degrees, then another 60 degrees. If you have/buy a six sided deep socket, you can mark the 60 degrees divisions easily on the socket - each point on the socket is 60degrees apart - it makes it easy peasy to get your 60 degrees...

The curious case of the increase in engine noise

Hi all, bit of a mystery today, hopefully you can throw some suggestions at it. 1985 90" with a Disco 200tdi conversion. Driving on an A road around 55mph when the engine noise suddenly became much louder/more tappety. Not a wierd noise, just the usual TDi clatter, but I'd say the volume went...

Remind me please - bulb type for dash warning lights

I have bought these in the past, but can't remember for the life of me what size they are and I've just used my last spare. I'm talking about the bulbs for the warning panel. I think they are 1.2 watt - maybe type 286? Someone will know..... It's a 1985 90"/Ninety

Classic Land Rover Wiper repair tale

What with all the recent rain/snow, the recent loss of my single wipe and then slow speed became an issue. Working fine on the fast speed, so I reasoned that the motor must be OK. Wrestled off the steering column covers, expecting to see a bit of dirt/corrosion - looked OK. Despite the meter...

    I want to donate...

Spirit of Christmas and all that. I see a few recent posts, but none with a positive answer. Are we able to become a donate at the moment?

    Cleaning wheel arch extensions

A while back, I had a rush of blood to the head and I t cut the old girl. She came up quite well considering the paint is over 30 years old, but I spilled some on the wheel arch extensions and detergent doesn't shift it. What will remove the white marks?

Something to give you bad dreams

Off on our jolly hols last week, until 50 miles down the road we heard a ping above the usual noise at 60mph. Nothing seemed wrong, until I slowed down at a roundabout. A nasty vibration started at 40 mph. Moving away from the other side of the roundabout, it started again at 25mph. I...

    Has anyone modded a thermostat?

As per the title. I've been contemplating the running temp of the 200tdi since installation in December. The engine came without a fan or cowl. I fitted a Durite gauge recently, which shows the engine temp climbing well into the 90s, then dropping to the low/mid 90's as the thermostat opens...

The 200tdi temperature sender threads thread

Hi all, hopefully someone has a bit of info at the back of their minds somewhere. This has been asked many times before, but a search hasn't revealed a definitive answer, just a part number, which I already know. There are two thread types for the 200TDi temperature sender, fine and course...

Best choice for the spare small dash gauge - oil temp/voltage/tacho?

As per the title, thinking of filling the spare position as a treat once I get her back on the road with a 200TDi under the bonnet. My original temp gauge works OK and has been fitted with the correct sender for the new engine, so I was thinking of something else. What have you guys fitted...

Sitting an engine on the bellhousing - vertically

I want to change the sump gasket on the 200tdi while it's out. Rather than hang it from the crane and work on my back in the wet, I'd like to set it on the flywheel housing - i.e. vertically. The oil is drained and I'll take the studs out before resting it on a bit of carpet. Anyone done...

200tdi conversion - pics of some fiddly bits

There are plenty of good threads covering the process, I thought I'd just add a few details and photos that are usually covered by one line. For example, converting the discovery flywheel housing to fit a defender (or 90 in my case) bell housing. First thing to do is remove the stud at 8...

Discovery 200tdi conversion - additional bolts into ladder frame?

Hi all. I'm picking up a discovery 200 this Thursday, just a quick question that someone who has done this can answer: Both Glencoyne and Steve Parkers recommend drilling and tapping the flywheel housing to bolt through into the ladder frame. They say it will likely leak if this isn't done...

TD1 conversion - cutting the rad surround

Hi all. I'm finally picking up a discovery 200tdi engine next week to convert the existing 2.5N/A. The conversion has been covered many times of course, but all the threads I've looked at describe cutting the chassis to lower the radiator height. I have a galvanised Richards chassis, which is...
