I would advise you to do this job properly rather than "bodge" with welds- if the box has been off recently (although an ache and should have been done when it was off) - you should suffer no issues with any seized bolts etc. No spec tools required. Not a long job

If its late model box like the one I'm working on at the moment it has a remote sender box on top. Wear in that would cause your symptoms - or wear to the yoke. Have to remove box and 4 bolts to remove selector box - unserviceable so new one will be required if it is the case

Next time it happens - if you are cranking and opening the throttle forces start let us know!

Indeed, sitting at the back of each bank. The other thing worth checking is your body earths (clean,bright and tight...) - i had an issue similar to this on a TD4 and once i had cleaned the body earths my mate had no further issues.

Ok, would have a look at ignition side then - possible loose connection to coil pack. Sounds like she has all pre conditions to start so probably won't be anything like CPS etc. (That been said its running sweet most of the time...) Has it been stripped down/any work been done to it recently?

Get any whining from the S/M? Is it going through the usual warm up prog - circa. 20s at 1200 then drops back down to normal idle? Can you go into more detail on the rough starting - just turning over, trying to catch, black smoke when she finally starts etc

Is your flywheel in good condition ? Need to check it for cracks(tiny) and blueing (excessive heat) Or the install hasn't been done correctly - does the car move freely (i.e. Clutch not engaged and no transmission drag - siezed vcu etc) Or driving style riding the clutch etc

Just acquired a 2.5 dse - I've come across what i assume is a tuning box, put in by a fully qualed mechanic (even LR tech don't wire this bad ;))! Just want to know what type it is and rough value - thanks !

Unless you are seeing swarf in your oil/metallic colour to it and running well - if its working don't f*** it!
